ST OCKlNG-SUPPORTER AND GARTAERA SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,923, dated June 24, 1884.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES F. WALTERS and WILLIAM J. WALTERs, both of Gang Mills,

in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stocking-Supporter and Garter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved device for supporting stockings from a waist-belt or from a corset, or from any other suitable article of clothing.

The invention consists in the combination, with a garter, of a bandhaving its ends secured to the same, which band is passed through a buckle held on a band adapted to be secured at its upper end to the clothing or to a belt.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which a perspective view of our improved stocking-supporter is shown.

A piece of webbing, A, or a band, has its ends secured to the garter B a short distance that is, about one-quarter of the length of the garter-from each other, each end of the band being secured to the garter equidistant from the middle of the same. The piece of webbing or band A is passed through the loop 0 of a buckle, D, held adjustably on the lower end of an elastic band, E, the upper end of which is secured in any suitable manner, either permanently or detachably, to a Waist-belt, corset, or to any other suitable article of clothing. The stocking will be supported from the elastic band by means of the buckle D and the 3 5 piece of webbing or band A. The garter is provided with clasps at the ends.

WVe are aware that stockings have been suspended from a band like the band A but such band was held on the stocking by clasps which 0 rapidly ruin the edge of the stocking. As the ends of the band are permanently secured to the garter, the garter cannot be defaced or torn by clasps. As the garter is passed around the 1eg,the stocking will be supported at all points, 4 5 and will not be drawn at one side only, as it is if held by clasps.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a garter, of a strand of webbing or other suitable material secured thereto, and an elastic strap or band attached to the upper looped portion of said webbing,

all substantially as set forth.

2. The combination,with a garter, of a piece of webbing, A, or a band having its ends secured to the garter, the buckle D, through which the band or piece of webbing Ais passed, and the bandv E, on the lower end of which the buckle D is held, substantially as herein shown and described.
