TILE 0R BRICK FOR FLOORS, &0. No. 300,521. Patented June 17, 1884.
UNITED STATES PATENr Q.
5 ICE) THOMAS 0. SMITH, OF BROOKLYX, NE\V YORK.
TILE OR BRICK FOR FLOORS, 84,0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,521, dated June 17, 1884.
Application filed May 29, 1884. (No model.)
To (Lurch/0m it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Tiles or Bricks, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of this invention is to provide tiles or bricks the backs of which are constructed with a lip and recess, so that upon placing them together in practical use they are locked, the one into the other, at the extreme back surfaces, making each piece dependent upon the piece in contact with it for the better support and retention in its proper place.
My invention is applicable generally to tiles or bricks of any form. w
The drawings accompanying this specification represent, in Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4, perspective views of different forms of tiles or bricks made in accordance with my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A. is the body of the tile or brick, of suitable form and size, the back surface of which is projected on one or two sides, as may be deemed best suited to the particular uses of the tile or brick, in the form ofa lip, B, pref erably made in the form of a quarter-circle, with a radius of about one-quarter of an inch. .The opposite sides of the tile or brick, at the back surface, are recessed, O, in corresponding size and form to the lip B, so that when the tiles or bricks are placed together in construction the lip B of the one exactly fits into the recess 0 of the adjoining one, thereby securing each piece at its extreme back surface, and locking the whole together. In all uses of tiles the necessity of locking them together so that the whole may be as nearly solid as possible is readily understood, whether they be used for floors, walls, ceilings, or other purposes.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim. as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A tile or brick the back surface of which is projected on one or two sides in the form of a lip, and the oppositesides of the back surface recessed to correspond with the size and form of the lip, substantially as shown and herein described.
THOR. C. SMITH.
