SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 547,159, dated October 1, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Ennrco O. ROSENZI, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bricks, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in bricks; and it consists of novel constructions of the same employed to lock the corners of a wall and imparta finished appearance to the same.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a corner-section of bricks embodying my invention, the same being shown in assembled position. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of a corner-section, showing a corner fillingpiece especially adapted thereto. Figs. 3 and 4 represent plan views, on a reduced scale, of corner-bricks embodying my invention. Figs. 5, 6, and 6-}- represent perspective views of bricks, on a reduced scale, embodying my invention. Fig. 7 represents a front view of the corner filling-piece, shown in Fig. 2, cmbodying my invention. Fig. 8 represents on a reduced scale a perspective view of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a brick, consisting in the presentinstance of a rectangular block having at one end the groove 13 and at its under side the groove 0,

which extends longitudinally of said block to meet the said groove B.

D designates a tongue which projects from said block opposite to said groove 0 and extends longitudinally of the same, and E designates a tongue which projects from that end of the aforesaid block opposite to the groove B, the construction and relations of said tongues and grooves being seen in Figs. 1, 5, and 6.

For corner purposes I use the bricks F and G, the same having their ends grooved at H and J, respectively. K and L designate grooves which extend along a face of said bricks F and G in a longitudinal direction from the grooves H and J and terminate at a short distance from the end of said block opposite said grooves H J. M and N designate grooves in the edges of said corner-blocks at.

a right angle to the grooves K and L and extending from face to face of said blocks, as do the grooves H and J. The aforesaid cornerblocks are made rights and lefts in order that the sections of the walls may be built up at right angles, said corner-blocks being alternately superimposed upon each other, as seen in Fig. 1, the relations of the grooves in said blocks to each other being shown in Figs. 3 and i.

When the tongue E and the groove B of two of the blocks A A meet at a right angle, as shown in Fig. 2,a corner filling-piece P is employed for the purpose of giving the wall a finished ap pearance, the construction of which cornerpiece is seen in Figs. 2, 7, and 8, the same consisting of a section having the portions Q and R extending at right angles to each other, at the inner angle of which is attached the tongue S, which has the part T extending beyond the portion Q and the part U extended above the face of the portions Q and R, the under side V of said tongue S terminating at about the middle of said section P, as seen in Figs. 7 and 8.

When it is desired to build a wall of the bricks shown, the operation is as follows: In Fig. 1 the corner-block F is placed in the position seen, the groove K being on the bottom and the groove M facing the right. The tongue E of one of the blocks A is then placed so as to engage the walls of the groove H and the corresponding tongue E of another block A engages the walls of the groove M, the tongues D of both blocks Abeing uppermost. The corner-block G is then placed in position, the walls of its groove L being engaged by said tongue D and its groove J pointing to the right, as seen, while its groove N is engaged by the tongue E of the superimposed block A. The block F is then placed in position, the walls of its groove K being engaged by the tongue D of the block A, and so on, the blocks F and G being alternately superimposed upon each other and the joints throughout the wall in every instance being broken, and by reason of the interlocking of the tongues and grooves fire or Water or any other fiuid will be prevented from passing through a wall built of the same. \Vhen two of the bricks A meet, so that a tongue E and a groove B of the same come together at right angles, as seen in Fig. 2, the filling-pieee P is employed, the portion T of the tongue S 611- tcriug the groove B, while the tongue E abuts against a side of the part '1 of said tongue S, the ends of the portions R and Q contacting with a portion of the ends of the blocks A, as is clearly seen in Fig. 2.

It will, of course, be understood that the ter1nstop andbottom, right andleft, &c., are merely relative terms and apply to the several sections only when the same are in the positions seen in the drawings.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the rectangular brick F having the groove K on its face, the groove II on one end and the groove M on one of its sides with the brick A having the tongues E and D respectively on top and end, substantially as described.

2. A brick having the grooves H, M, and K, the grooves H and M being parallel andin an end and side respectively of said brick, and the groove K being in the under side of said brick and at a right angle to the aforesaid grooves H and M, substantially as described.

3. A brick consisting of the angular portion with limbs Q and R, and a tongue extending above the top of the brick and beyond the outer end of the limb Q and down to the central portion of the latter, substantially as described.
