Description

I E. KUHN.
FLOORING; V
Nb.174,261. Patented Feb. 29,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
. EDWARD M. KUHN, or EAST PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT -|N FLOORING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [74,261. dated February 29, 18 76 application filed February 10, 1876.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. KUHN, of East Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flooring; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, makinga part of this specification. V
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of the tongues and grooves in flooring-boards. A
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an end view of the floor-boards connected together, inone position, and Fig. 2 is an end view also, showing them in reverse 7 position.)
In the figures, A A represent the floorboards, and B the sills to which they are secured. The ton guin g upon the ed ge of the board is seen in both figures, and is the same, although in some cases I reverse the sides, which, of course, makes the nails or screws pass in differently.
In Fig. 1 a shoulder is out from auto :10, then from m to a, then from a to a, then from c to c, leaving a tongue, which is beveled from c to a, near the center of the edge of the board. The screws or nails which hold the boards down to the sills pass in through the tongues from their beveled sides, as represented.
In the position exhibited in Fig.2, the nails or screws pass through more thickness of wood than they do in Fig. 1. The grooves in the boards are made to correspond in shape with the tongues, and when the two are placed together they form a close joint, each board being blind-nailed, and that, too,-withont breaking or injuring the tongue.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The floor-boards A, provided on one edge, at vor near the center, with a tongue, which is horizontal on one face and inclined on the other face, and a correspondinggroove on the opposite edge, and connected to the joists or; sills by screws or nails, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of January, 1876.
' E. M. KUHN.
