PORTABLE RANGE.
(No Model.)
N. PETERS. Pmwmh n tm, wammgmn. DJ;
UNITED STATEs PATENT @rricn.
\VILLIAM P. LE\VIS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVAXIA.
PORTABLE RANGE,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,273, dated June 10, 1884.
Application filed November Ti, 1883.
2'0 it whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered a new and useful Improvement in Portable Ranges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, concise, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-dike letters indicating like parts- Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a stove or portable range, a portion of the top plate being broken away. Fig. 2 is a section on the line a a: of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are side and end viewsof the detachable fine-box and pipe-collar. Fig. shows side and edge views of the deflecting-plate. Fig. 6 shows side and sectional views of the stopper-plate.
My invention relates to that class of stoves which are known to the trade as portable ranges. The portable range differs from the ordinary coolestove in that when in use it is placed sidewise on the hearth, and, as it has but one oven-door, it is made right and left handed, so as to conform to'the arrangement of the water-pipes, sink, &c., in the kitchen; and it further differs from the cook-stove in having the flue-box and pipe-collar arranged at the side opposite the oven-door, instead of at the end. This flue-box is either castor bolted on the side plate, which is made solid, and the pipe-collar is cast on the top plate, which is fitted over and made to conform with the body of the stove and flue. If it is desired to relocate a stove of thekind above described, it may happen that the arrangement of waterpipes and sink in the room in which the range is to be relocated difiers from that in which the range was first placed. It would then be necessary to change the range from a right to a left handed one, and this change necessitates an entire change in some of the parts of the stove, which involves considerable expense and time and the employment of skilled labor.
The object of this invention is to so construct a portable range that it can be quickly changed from a right to a left hand without expense and-without employing a skilled workman;
(No model.)
and my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Thebody A of the range is made of the usual form and construction of the ordinary cook- 5 stove, but with oven-doors in both of its sides, and has the usual top plate, a, made in one or more pieces, as usual. In the overhanging part b of the side pla-tes,'c, are formed two holes or openings, (l, for the exit of the smoke, gases, &c., from the stove, and onthe inside face of the overhanging parts I), and justin front of the openings (1, are formed the inwardlyprojecting walls 0, for the purpose to be hereinafter stated. Over the hole or opening (Z on 65 one side of the range is attached a flue-box, f. This flue-box, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, has the general shape of a pipe-elbow, its walls at one end being made to fit closely against the overhanging part Z) of the side plate, 0, and is provided with laterallyprojecting lugs g, for attachment, by means of screws or otherwise,to the overhanging part b. The inner wall, 71., of the flue-box is inclined, so as to fit and rest up on the inclined flange a of the top plate, a. 7 The outer end of the flue-box is formed into pipe-collar it, on which is placed the stovepipe whenthe range is in use. The opening (Z on the opposite side of the stove is closed by a plate, Z, conforming in shape to the overhanging part of the side plate, 0, and having at its ends lugs Z, for attachment to the part c. Transversely across the top of the oven is formed a curved rib or projection, in, and a short distance in front of this rib are formed 8 5 at intervals the lugs or ribs a. The rib m and lugs nforni a guide for the curved deflecting. plate 0, by which the heat, smoke, and gases are directed on the passage to the flue under the rear or end stove-holes in the top plate. The under side of the top plate is also provided with corresponding ribs and lugs, 1n and a, (see Fig. 2,) for supporting and'guiding the top of the deflecting-plate. The ends of the deflecting-plate are made straight, so as to 5 match with the inner end of the vertical walls 6. The ends of the deflecting-plate may be made to conform to the shape of the recess formed by the top plate and the overhanging part b of the side plate; but in that case one 100 end of the plate owould project into the opening for the passage of the smoke from the firechamber, so I prefer to form the vertical walls 6 on the overhanging parts I), which, in connection with the deflecting-plate 0, forms a wall across one-half of the stove, as clearly shown iii-Figs. l and 2.
Now, if it is desired to change the range from a right-hand, as it has been shown and described, to a left-hand, it is only necessary to remove the flue-box f and stopper-plate l and change them to the opposite sides of the range, and to push the deflectingplate 0 over to that side of the range on which the flue-box is attached. It is obvious that this change can be easily and quickly made by an ordinary workman.
On the top of the oven, and extending from the rib m to the rear end of the range, is placed a partition, 1), in which is formed an opening, 8, which is opened and closed by a damper, o, operated from the rear of the range. This damper regulates the draft.
My improvement may be used with any known or desired arrangement of flues, the pre ferred arrangement being that by which the smoke passes along one side of the top of the oven, down a diving-fiue, under and across the bottom of the oven, up the uptake, and out the chimney. \Vhen the defiecting-plateis changed, the direction of the smoke is correthe combination of a combined flue-box and pipe-collar and a stopper-plate, the said parts being attachable to and detachable from the side plates and interchangeable, substantially as set forth.
2. In a convertible right and left hand stove or portable range having recessed side plates, the combination of a combined flue-box and pipe-collar, a stopper-plate, said parts being attachable to and detachable from the side plates and interchangeable, and an adjustable deflecting-plate,substantially as set forth.
3. In a convertible right and left hand stove or portable range having recessed side plates, the combination of the flue-box and pipe-collar f, the stopper-plate Z, and the deflecting-plate 0, moving in guides formed on the oven-top and the under side of the top plate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
VILLIAM I. LEWIS.
