IMPROVEMENT IN MAGAZlNE COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,783, dated July 3, 1577; application filed May 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN DUNMoRE MUR- BAY, of Port Sarnia, in the Province of Ontario, and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking Stoves and Ranges and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in 'the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig.3 is a top plan, and Fig. at is a vertical section after the line a; a: in Fig. 3.. V
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts of a range or stove, to be used for cooking or heating purposes, in such a manner that it may be used for wood or coal with equal facility, and, when used with the latter, shall be a self-feeder, substantially as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the two sheets of drawings hereto annexed, A is the box or body of the range or stove, the top plate A of which is provided with a series of perforations or pot-holes, as usual. Arranged centrally over the fire-pot 1 is a larger'hole, a, into which fits the lower part of the feeder or magazine B. This consists of a receptacle preferably, but not necessarily, tubular or cylindrical in shape, and provided with an annular rim or shoulder, b, by which it rests. upon the top plate A, so
that it may be readilyremoved and again replaced. Fitting over the top of the magazine B is a removable cover, B, which also fits into the opening a, so as to close this when the magazine is removed.
(3 is a removable fire-pot, madeof iron or earthenware, or a combination of these materials, and having a central opening, 0, covered by the revolving grate d. This grate may be shaken by means of a handle, d, reaching to the front part of the stove, back of the sliding doors 0 0, so as to be easy of access.
The upper part of fire-pot 0 has two projecting rims or flanges, f f, which, when the pot is inserted into the stove, rest on projecting lugs or flanges g g, so as to hold it firmly in place. By simply lifting it off of these lugs the fire-pot may be readily removed.
D is a removable hearth, resting on lugs or flanges h h projecting from the inner sides of the walls of the stove, in the same manner as the removable fire-pot U. Flush with the hearth-plate D is an ash-pit, i, which projects from the front part of the stove, and is covered with a slide, 71. k k are slides or doors opening into the ash-pit (or oven) E, to regulate the draft or heat, as circumstances may require. F is the oven, which is surrounded by lines I m n, of gradually increasing size toward the outlet 0, for the more equal distribution of heat, and p is the damper for diverting the draft around the oven. 9 is the stove-pipe, which is provided with a valve or damper, 1, as usual.
When my improved range or stove is to be used for burning coal, the fire-pot G and magazine B are both inserted. The hearth-plate D may either be left or it may be removed at pleasure. When retained,a co1npartment,E, is formed in the lower front part of the stove, to which access may be had through a side door, 8, and which may be used as an auxiliary oven or baker but when plate Dis removed this compartment serves the purpose of an ash-pit. When the stove is to be used as. a wood-burner, the fire-pot O is removed, and the logs are fed upon the hearthplate D, through the side door t. The magazine B is also removed, and the opening a covered with the top cover B. H is an opening (there may be one or more of these) covered with a sliding door for cleaning out the fines, and u is a flue for heating compartment E when this is used as an oven.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States-- 1. In a range or stove for cooking and heating purposes, the combination of the box or body A, having a removable magazine, B, removable fire-pot G, and the flues l, m, n, and
u, with the removable hearth-plate D for wood burning, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination of the range or stovemyown lfihav e hereto affixedmysignaturein A, having double ash-pi'ts i and E, with the pne'seuceiof tawo witnesses.
removable hearth-plate D for wood-burning V and removable fire-pot O for Goal-burning: JOHN DUNMORE MURRAY substantially as andfor the purpose herein- Witnesses: before set forth. CH'ARLES STEWART M RIsoN,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ALEXANDER BARoL-AY TAYLOR.
