Description

H. A. FARN'AM. Cooking and Heating Apparatug.
Patented Aug.10,1880.
lllll' I IIIIHHI HHII I Am AMYW S mwM N. FEIERS, FHOTO LITHOGRAP UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
HARRIET A. FARNAM, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HER RIGHT TO HOMER O. ELLER, OF SAME PLACE.
COOKING AND HEATING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,025, dated August 10, 1880.
Application filed November 22, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, HARRIET ADALINE FARNAM, of St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and Stateof Minnesota, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking and Heating Apparatus, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which to Figure 1 is a perspective view of the auxiliary top and cover. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the main fire-chamber or furnace. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the broiler. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cover of the I 5 fire-chamber, all disconnected from each other, and Fig. 5 a sectional elevation of the whole apparatus.
This invention relates to an apparatus for cooking and heating attached to stoves; and
it consists of a heating apparatus adapted to be applied to a hole in a stove-cover, and having a lower fire-pot or compartment made flaring at top and bottom, and provided with a stationary grate and a revolving damper, and 2 5 a broiler over which the firepot is fitted, an upper flaring drum, the latter and the fire-pot being provided with covers having a central orifice in each, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In using the ordinary broiler great difficulty is experienced from the smoke and gas arising from the fire, as well as the necessity of a very large fire (when wood is used) to obtain the requisite amount of glowing coals. This 5 necessitates the waste of a large amount of fuel, and is a troublesome process, especially in warm weather. A
To avoid these objections is the object of my invention, which consists of a fire-pot or brazier, A, made flaring at the top and bottom and contracted at a, and provided at the coutracted part with a grate or slotted plate, I), over which a similar slot-ted plate, 0, with an operating-handle, d, revolves, the two plates forming an adjustable register or damper whereby the draft maybe controlled.
The fire-pot is intended to be arranged over one of the holes, 6, of a stove, B, as shown in Fig. 5, so that when the fire is lighted the smoke, &c., will be carried downward through 1 the grate b 0 into the stove, and will exit from thence through the ordinary channels. By this means none of the products of combustion pass upward or come in contact with the articles being cooked or the utensils containing 5 them. This is especially advantageous in broiling, the position ofthe broiler being shown at C, Fig. 5, as no smoke, cinders, or unpleasant fumes or gas comes in contact with the meat.
Under some circumstances a larger fire is required, as in heating flat-irons, &c., and to provide for this I arrange an auxiliary flaring drum or chamber. D, upon top of the fire-pot A, as shown, so that a larger heating-surface may be obtained by the use of the same grate b c, and with but little additional expense.
Covers E E are used over both the fire-pots A D, they having perforations g g to admit the necessary air to feed the fire.
The gxate may be made to revolve, slide, or move in any other manner to obtain the desired result.
I am aware that it is not new to carry the draft downward through the fire in a brazier into the stove, as such a device is shown in the patent of N. 0. Bond, February 13, 1866, No. 52,519; but none, so far as I am aware, show an adjustable damper or grate, or an auxiliary fire-pot and a flaring drum, D, the whole constructed and operated as in my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the stove B, having the hole 0, of the fire-pot A, made flaring at top and bottom, and provided with a stationary grate, b, and revolving slotted damper c, with handle d, removable broiler O, flaring 9o drum D, cover E, having the central orifice,
g, and cover E, having central orifice, g, the whole constructed and arranged to operate in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARRIET ADALINE FARNAM.
