Description

UNTTED STATES Patented May 12, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. ALLEN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM SOMERVILLE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
STOVE OR RANGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,561, dated May 12, 1903.
Application filed May 2, 1902. Serial No, 105,618. (No modeli) T aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in stoves and ranges whereby the heat generated in the fire-box can be utilized either for cooking or for quick baking by the operator shifting suitable dampers, so as to cause the h at to traverse either around the bakingr5 oven before reaching the chimney or to direct the heat into the heating-chamber under the top plate without causing the heat to pass around the oven.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and'combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims;
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing,
forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a sectional side elevation of the improvement.
The improved stove is provided with a suitable shell A, mounted on legs B in the usual manner and containing a fire-box O,opening at its lower end into an ash-pan D, having an extension E for removing the ashes from the pan whenever deemed necessary. The free end of the fire-box O terminates a distance below the top plateA of the casing or shell A and connects with the heating-chamber F, extending under the said top plate and over the top of the oven G, around the sides and bottom of which extends a passage H, conto meeting at its ends with the ends of the said heating-chamber F, as plainly indicated in the drawing. Dampers I and I are located at the junction of the ends of the heatingchamber F with the ends of the main pas- 5 sage I-I, so that by the operator throwing the dampers I and I into the position shown in the drawing heat from the fire-box G will pass into the passage H and through the same, and thus around the sides and bottom of the oven, without entering the heating-chamber F, and when the said dampers I and I are swung into the position shown in dotted lines in the drawing then the passage H is cut off from the heat, and the latter passes directly from the fire-box G into the heating-chamber F. The rear ends of the heating-chamber F and the main passage H connect by an outlet J with the stovepipe K, so that the heat after passing through the passage II without passing through the heating-chamber F can reach the said outlet J, and the heat can also reach the said outlet when the dampers I I are in a horizontal position and the heat passes through the heating-chamber F. Thus when it is desired to bake quickly in the oven G the dampers I and I are thrown into an upright position, as indicated in the drawing, to cause the heat emanating from the fire-box to circulate around the sides and bottom of the oven. \Vhen it is desired to do cooking only on the top plate A, then the dampers I and I are thrown downward into a horizontal position for the heat to pass directly into the chamber F Without circulating through the passage H.
Below the ash-pan D is arranged a warming-oven L, and below the latter is arranged an auxiliary passage H, opening into the bottom part of the main passage H, the front end of the said auxiliary passage H being pro- Vided with a damper-door H which when opened allows air from the outside to pass into the auxiliary passage H and into the passage H to create a strong draft in the firebox 0. The damper-door H serves to allow cleaning the passages PI and H of soot and the like.
The inside parts of the stove may be lined with sheet metal, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A cooking and baking stove or range, comprising a fire-box, a baking-oven, a heating-chamber extending over the top of the oven and below the top plate of the stove, a main passage around the sides and bottom of the oven and opening at its ends into the heating-chamber, the stove being provided with an outlet leading from the rear ends of the loo heating-chamber and passage, dampers controlling the ends of the heating-chamber and the said passage, and a warming-oven under the ash-pan of the fire-box, the stove being provided with an auxiliary passage under the warming-oven leading to the bottom portion of the main passage, at its junction with the front portion thereof, the lower part of the front portion of the main passage being curved to direct the heat rearwardly into the bottom portion of said passage, as set forth.
2. A cooking and baking stove or range, comprising a fire-box, a baking-oven, a heating-chamber extending over the top of the oven and below the top plate of the stove, a main passage around the sides and bottom of the oven, opening at its ends into the ends of the heating-chamber, two dampers located one at each end of the heating-chamber at its junction with the ends of the main passage, the said dampers being adapted to permit the heat to pass equally through the heatingchamber and main passage or to cut off either the passage or the heating-chamber from the heat, as desired, a warming-oven under the ash-pan of the fire-box, an auxiliary passage under the warming-oven leading to the bottom portion of said main passage and a damper-door on the front end of said auxiliary passage, the lower portion of the rear wall of the warming-oven and the corresponding wall of the baking-oven, forming the front portion of the main passage, being curved to direct the heat rearwardly into the bottom portion ofthe main passage, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. ALLEN.
