COOKING STOVE OR RANGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,106, dated April 23, 1895.
A plication filed July 13, 1894. Serial No. 517,439. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALEB V. FLEETWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking Stoves or Ranges, which improvement is fully set forth in the followin gspecification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a longitudinal section, on line a: a: Fig. II, of a cooking stove provided with my improved double flue; Fig. 11, a top plan view of the same, the top plate being removed; Fig. III, a plan view of the under side of the oven, and Fig. IV, an enlarged detail view of the removable swinging partition attached to the under side of the oven.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of cooking stoves and ranges and its object is to provide a simple and effcctive device whereby the heat may be'utilized to the greatest advantage and at the same time thoroughly and uniformly distributed in such a manner as to insure the best results in the operation of cooking.
The peculiar features and advantages of my invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whicha designates the walls of the stove or range; 2, the top plate; 3, the fire-box; 4, the baking oven; 5, the soot chamber, and 6 the warming oven.
The flue space above the oven is divided by a central longitudinal partition 7 mounted on a metal strip 8 which is removably attached to the top of the oven by screws 9. In order to provide a free draft to facilitate the kindling of a fire, a part of the upper edge of the partition is removed to permit the smoke to pass immediately into the smoke box 10 through an opening 11 which is normally closed by a suitable appliance.
12 indicates a vertical continuation of the partition. This is suitably attached to the rear wall of the stove and extends to the bottom of the oven where it j oins'a supplemental partition 13 which swings laterally on a rod 14, the outer end of which extends through the wall of the stove and forms a handle,- while the inner end is supported by and turns within a keeper 15, which is struck out of a metal strip 16 removably attached to the under side of the oven by screws 17. If the swinging partition be turned up against the bottom of the oven and its inner end thrust under the keeper as shown in Fig. 1V, any accumulation of soot may be removed through a suitable opening in the front side of the stove.
The operation of the device will be readily understood.
The partitions 7, 12 and 13 as described form two heat flues 18 and 19 which are kept separate until they pass the inner end of the swinging partition. The current passing through the rear flue encounters a deflecting plate 20. The heat is thus directed toward the center of the oven where it meets the ourrent from the other fine as shown in Fig. III.
The movement of the heat is thus retarded and at the same time uniformly distributed beneath the oven before it escapes into the smoke box. I
What I claim as new is In a cooking stove or range the herein described double flue, the fire box, the baking oven, the longitudinal partition mounted on a strip removably secured to the top of the oven and its upper edge cut away, as shown,
the vertical partition attached to the rear wall.
of the stove in combination with the supplemental partition below the oven, the laterally movable rod to which said partition is secured, and the metal strip removably attached to the under side of the oven, and the keeper formed integral therewith, with which said supplemental partition is adapted to engage, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, this 2d day of July, 1894, in the presence of witnesses.
CALEB V. FLEETWOOD.
