SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,934, dated May 20, 1884.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES C. BAUDER, of Burnside, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Trace-Buckle, of which the following is a full,

clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate cor= ro responding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of my new and improved trace-buckle as it appears when in use, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and 4c are side and plan views,

respectively, of the main part of the buckle; and Figs. 5 and 6 are sectional and plan views, respectively, of the grip-loop.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the rear and main part of the buckle, which holds the forward end of the tug B by means of the tongues a a, passing through suitable holes made through thetug, and 0 represents the forward part (which I term the grip-loop) of the buckle attached to the rear end of the haine-tug D. The main part A of the buckle is made in skeleton form and of considerable length, with the end cross-bars, a b, and central crossbar, c, and it is curved outward at its rear end to permit the tug B to pass under the cross-bar a and over the cross-bars b c, as shown in Fig. 1. The cross-bars a b are formed 3 5 or provided, respectively, with the abovenamed tongues a c, which hold the tug B, and these tongues project in opposite directions-that is, the tongue a projects inward, while the tongue 0 projects outwardso that 40 these tongues are adapted to enter the holes made in the tug B from opposite sides of the tug. The grip-loop G is attached to the hametug D by means of the bolt or screw f, and the side bars, a e, of the loop are bent to pass upthrough the main partA between the crossbars I) and 0 thereof, and allow the tug B to pass through it under the outer cross-bar, f. The outer edges of the side plates, (2 e, of the grip-loop O are formed with the notches d cl, which receive the lips b b, formed upon the edge of the cross-bar b, as shown in Fig. 1, thus fulcruming the loop 0, so that in action the cross-bar f of the loop 0 will grip the tug B upon the cross-bar c in rear of the tongue 0. The notches d d and lips 11 1/ also serve to always maintain the proper relative positions of the main parts A O of the buckle, and also to prevent the tug from being inj uriously compressed and Worn by the bar f of the loop 0. Constructed in this manner the buckle is very durable and very easy upon the tug, and is very convenient in adjusting the tug.

Instead of forming the cross-bar b with the lips I), the bar might be made plain, without the said lips, if desired, and loops 0 may be formed on or fixed to the main part A of the buckle for attaching thereto the back-band, belly band, and breeching-straps of the harness.

'Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The main part A, having the oppositelyarranged tongues a 0, adapted for holding the tug B, in combination with the grip-loop G, arranged to grasp the tug 13, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.

2. The grip-loop G, formed with the notches (Z, in combination with the main part A, having the cross-piece b, and devices on opposite 8o sides of its ends for holding the tug, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. The grip-loop 0, formed with the notches cl, in combination with the bar 1), formed with the lips I), substantially as and for the pur- 8 5 poses set forth.
