TRACE=BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION formingl part-of Letters Patent No. 301,565, dated July 8,1884.
(No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, MosEs C. Crmsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camp Point, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace-Buckles, of which the following is a specification, reference `being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in trace-buckles; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the same, all as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figurel represents a vertical sectional view of my buckle. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View.
Referring by. letter to the accompanying drawings, Adesignates the buckleframe, consisting of the side bars, a a., which are connected at one end by the transverse bar b, to which the tug end ofthe trace is attach ed, and at the opposite end the side bars are connected by the transverse loop-bar c. The side bars are constructed with longitudinal slots d, which have an upward curve at their forward end, and at the rear end of said slots, and communicating therewith, are openings e, which are larger than the width of the slots aforesaid, and form a keyhole opening in Aeach of the side bars. B represents the tongue-bar, and
f the tongue secured to the center thereof.
This bar is designed to be of less thickness than the slots in the side bars, and in which it works.,
At each 'end of this bar B is a head, g, having flanges k, which are of less diameter than the openings e in the side bars.
It will be seen that in order to .connect the tongue-bar with the side bars ofthe buckleframe'one end of said tongue-bar is to be inserted through one of the openings e, from the inside of the frame outwardly, after which the opposite end or head of said bar B is in-V serted through the opposite opening, after which the bar is moved forward in the slots in the side bars, and by means of the hanged heads at each end thereof is securely attached to the frame. In releasing the bar from the frame a reverse movement of the bar to that just described is necessary, and the slots being inclined forwardly and upwardly causes the buckle to bindupon the trace, and the tighter slots serve to allow the tongue-bar to be moved forward, thus readily releasing the frame from binding on the trace, and thereby permitting easy disengagement of said tongue and trace, and the slot, as herein shown, causes a gradual inclined movement of the tongue-bar from the horizontal portion of the slot to the'upper end of the incline portion as the pressure is applied to the trace'.
Previous to my invention buckles have been Constr/noted with inclined slots in the side bars to receive a .headed tongue-plate, as shown in the Patents No. 109,378, November 22, 1870, and 114,184, April 25, 1871; hence I do not claim such a device, broadly; but,
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The hereindescribed trace-buckle, consisting of the frame A, the side bars, a, of which are provided with longitudinal slots d, termi# nating at one end in an elongated opening, e, and upwardly inclined at the eXtreme opposite end, the narrow cross-bar B, provided at each end with the elongated flanged heads g,
and the tongue f, the Whole constructed and adapted'to operate as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MOSES C. CHASE.
