Description

PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. EOE, OE MADISON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN CHEESE-HOOPS.
Specitication forming part of Letters Patent No. 29,824, dated August 28, 1860.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY A. ROE, of Madison, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Cheese-Hoops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making a partof this specification, in which- Figure l is a face view of my invention applied to the ends of a cheese-hoop. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line a" a', Fig. l.`
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
To enablethose skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A B represent the two ends of a cheese-hoop, which may be constructed in the usual way. To the end A of the hoop there is a plate, C, permanently riveted or otherwise secured, and this plate C has a yoke, D, connected to it, said yoke being an elliptical opening iu a projection which extends over the end B ofthe hoop. This yoke also has a slotted arm, E, at its front end, through which a bolt, F, passes, said bolt passing through a plate, G,which is attached to the end B of the hoop by screw-bolts a, the bolt Falso passing through the hoop, as shown in Fig. 2. The bolt F has washers b on it, and the plate G is provided with two parallel guides, c c, which project over the plate C of the end A of the hoop, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. To the end of the hoop there is attached an eccentric or cam, H, and this eccentric is within the yoke D, and has a handle, I, connected with it. The plate C is secured at the edge of the end A of the hoop; but the plate G may be secured to the end B of the hoop at a greater or less distance from its edge, according to the size of the cheese the hoop is to encompass, the bolts a being provided with nuts a', to admit of the ready adjustment ot' the plate G.
From the above description it will be seen that by turning the eccentric or cam II the ends A B may be spread apart or contracted, and retained in either an expanded or contracted state. The guides c c prevent any lateral movement of theends A B of the hoop, as also do the slotted arm E and bolt F. When the plate G is attached some distance from the edge of the end B of the hoop, so as to contract the same, the washers b may be fitted on the bolt F at the inner side of the arm E, so as to compensate for the outward position of the arm E, for the more the hoop is contracted the more, ofcourse, will the arm E extend out or project from the hoop. rIhis varying position ofthe arm relatively with the periphery of the hoop may be fullycompensated for by properly adjusting the washers b.
Having thus described niy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement and combination, in the Inanner herein shown and described, of the plate G, eccentric H, and bolt F, with the slotted arm E, yoke D, guides c c, and plate A, for the purpose set forth.
H. A. ROE.
