Description

J. MILLER.

Thin-Coupling.

No. 24,137. Patented May 24, 1859 WZZn 6 9565.

iLPETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

JOHN MILLER, OF BUCYRUS, OHIO.

ATTACHING THILLS TO AXLES.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,137, dated May 24, 1859.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN MILLER, of Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Coupling Thills or Poles to Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a longitudinal vertical section of my improvement. Fig. 2, is a plan or top view of same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

This invention consists in the peculiar form of the jaws on the clip, and the hook on the thill irons, with shoulders so arranged that the thills are always perfectly firm and secure against accident when in use and very easily detached and adjusted without the use of springs'or screws; by simply raising them up nearly perpendicular, as will be hereinafter fully shown and described.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.

A represents a band or clip which is fastened around the aXletree B, and is secured on the underside by means of the crosspiece e, and screw nuts mm. On the front part of the clip A are two jaws D D having a circular face from b to 0 through which also passes a round iron pin 2' either riveted or welded in.

E. represents one of the irons (generally bolted on the under side of the thills) having two shoulders 1" 1" which fit up and work against the circular face I) 0 of the jaws D D and on the one end of this iron E is turned a hook s which fastens and plays on the pin z' as plainly shown in Fig. 1.

From the above description of parts it will be seen, that as the vehicle is drawn along with the hook 8 around the pin 2', and the shoulders 1 1 against the circular face I) 0 that it is a simple, safe and convenient coupling, and not liable to drop out and jeopardize human life as is frequently the case with loose bolts.

I do not claim the band or clip A with jaws D D nor do I claim the hook s for they are well known, and commonly used; but,

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The adjusting and securing the hook s on the pin 2' by means, of the circular face 6 0 on the jaws D D and the shoulders r 1" on the iron E substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

JOHN MILLER.
