Description
C. W. GAGE.
Thill Coupling.
Patented July 23, 1861.
Ina/@75 UNITED STATES lirgl ENT OFFICE.
CHARLES WV. GAGE, OF HOMER, NEW YORK.
MODE OF ATTACHING THILLS TO CARRIAGE-AXLES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,864, dated July 23, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. GAGE, of Homer, Cortland county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Shaft-Couplings for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings making part of this specification A, represents a portion of the axle of the vehicle.
B represents a jaw which is stationary being provided with a loop which surrounds the axle, and by means of which it is secured to said axle.
C represents a movable jaw which is secured to jaw B by means of a bolt x. Each of the jaws is provided with short hollow journals a, a, which are conical in form as represented.
E, represents the iron at the end of the shaft which is provided with an opening into which the small ends of the journals a, a, fit.
D is a bolt with a head on one end and a screw on the other, which passes through the two hollow journals (0, a, and also through the shaft iron. This bolt confines the jaws together and keeps the shaft iron in its proper place. It will readily be seen that when the opening in the iron E, wears, so
that the shaft rattles the two jaws can be brought nearer together pressing the journals into the iron and thus tightening it in its place and preventing all noise and rattling. By this arrangement I make a cheap and effective anti rattler.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The employment of the jaws B and C, one of which is movable, and both of which are provided with sections of conical journals, when the same are used in the manner and connection herein represented for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES W. GAGE. lVitnesses \VM. ANDREWS, AMos HOBART.
