"CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,152, dated April 22, 1884.
Application filcd' February ll, 1884. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that 1, ROBERT T. Monmsou, Jr., of Medina, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in car-couplers, the object being to provide a coupling-pin pivoted to the draw-head in such a manner that it will automatically receive the link and couple the cars. A further obr 5 ject is to provide mechanism by means of which the coupling-pin may be raised andv the cars uncoupled from either side or on top of the cars. A further object is to provide a weight pivoted to the draw-head that will hold the link in position to engage other drawheads in coupling cars. A further object is to provide a cup attached to the weight that will prevent snow, rain, and ice from entering the chambers of the draw-head. YVith these objects in View my invention consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts, hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is 0 a vertical section of the draw-head, couplingpin, weight, and link in position, and arranged according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the weight and coup-- ling-pin. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of 3 5 the mechanism for operating the coupling-pin from the side or top of the car. i A represents the draw-head,with a vertical chamber, A, extending through the draw-. head from top to bottom, and opening into 40, the flaring chamber A that receives the link. The top and bottom walls, a and a, of the chamber A diverge to such an extent, as they extend toward the front end, that a link held by another draw-head that is considerably 11.5 higher or lower will be guided to its place to engage the coupling-pin.
Bis the weight, chambered at B, so as to embrace the coupling-pin 0, so that both are pivoted on the pin D, extending through the draw-head. The weight B is provided with the cover I), that covers the recess A, so as to exclude snow, rain, or ice from the chamber. An opening, 1), extends from the top of the cap I) through the weight to the chamber B, through which passes the link 0, attached to 5 5 the coupling-pin O, and by means of which the said pin may be raised and the'cars uncoupled. When the link E is thrust into the draw-head, it raises the pin 0 and the weight B. After it has sufficiently entered, the pin 0 drops back in its place, securing the link, while the weight rests on the top of the link and holds it by means of the seat ai in about a horizontal position. As the weight is pivoted, as aforesaid, it will rise or fall to accommodate any position that the link may assume, but without interfering with the coupling pin or cramping the link. W'hen the link is only engaged in the drawhead A, it will remain, as shown in Fig. 1, in a suitable position to engage the draw-head of other cars as they approach for coupling. As aforesaid, by means of the link or rod 0, the coupling-pin may be raised at any time and the cars uncoupled.
A red, F, may be provided, that is secured by staples or other suitable means across the end of the car at a convenient distance above the draw head. This rod at the center is provided with the horizontal arm F, that at the end is attached by any suitable meanssuch, for instance, as a link or chain, G-to the link 0. A similar attachment, g, leads to the top of the car. The rod F at both sides of the car is provided with the arms f. By S 5 means of these attachment-s the coupling-pin may be raised from either side or from the top of the car, or from between the cars when necessary.
1. The pivoted weight B, provided with the cover I), and the chamber B, adapted to receive the coupling-pin and the opening I), substantially as set forth.
' 2. The combination, with the draw-head, of a coupling-pin pivoted at its upper end to the draw-head, a weight also pivoted to the drawhead and provided with a groove in which the coupling-pin rests, and a chain or other device attached to the free end of the coupling- 10o pin and passingupwardlythroughthe weight, 0, arranged as aforesaid, of the rod F, prosubstantially as set forth. vidcd with the arms F and f and the connec- 3. The combination, with a draw-head, of tions G and g, substantially as set forth. the coupling-pin pivoted to the draw-head, In testimony whereof I sign this specifica- I 5 5 the weight 13, pivoted to the draw-head and tion, in the presence of two witnesses, this provided witha groovein which the coupling- 28th day of January, 1884. pin rests, and with a seat a, adapted to rest v1 1 T on the link and hold it in position to engage ROBERL MORRISON the coupling-pin of the approaching draw- XVitnesses: 10 head, substantially as set forth. 1 CHAS. H. DORER,
4. The combination, with the coupling-pin 1 ALBERT E. LYNCH.
