UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES GEERY, OF BUTTE CITY, MONTANA TERRITORY.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,335, dated September 20, 1881. Application filed July 27, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES GEERY, of Butte City, in the county of Silver Bow and Territory of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Gouplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in car-couplings; and it consists in the combination ofa pivoted lever which is to be operated by any suitable means placed on or above the platform of the car, and which lever has a rod connected to each of its ends, one of which pulls one of the draw-heads back at the same time that the other rod forces the other draw-head backward, and thus causes them to separate, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a quick and ready means of forcing two drawheads apart which are forced together by means of springs, and thus enable two cars to be readily uncoupled.
Figure l is a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an inverted view of the same, showing two heads forced apart. Fig. 3 is a perspective of my invention.
Arepresents theframe-work of the car, which may be of any suitable construction, and in which is pivoted or otherwise arranged, in any suitable manner, the draw-head B. This drawhead has a hook or shoulder formed upon its inner side, and its front end is kept pressed over past the center of the frame by means of a suitable spring. When two heads, thus constructed, run together they push each other aside at theirfront ends until the shoulders or hooks pass each other, then both of them snap inward toward each other, and the cars are coupled together.
Pivoted upon, thefront end of theframe of the caris the lever G,which leveris connected atone of its ends by means of a chain to any suitable mechanism or device for operating it, placed either upon the platform of the car or upon the top of the car, as may be preferred. To the upper end of this lever is pivoted a rod, 1), which is fastened to the outer side ofthe draw-head, so that when the chain is pulled upon the drawhead will be pulled outward toward the side ing against the inner side of the opposite draw- I head, forces the opposite draw-head outward in an opposite direction; The two draw-heads are thus acted quickly upon, for while one is being pulled outward the other is being pushed outward in the opposite direction. Neither one of the draw-heads is thus caused to move more than is necessary, and the operator can quickly and easily disconnect the cars at any time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the pivoted lever 0, provided with a rod at its upper end for drawing one of the draw-heads toward it, and a pushrod at its lower end for forcing the opposite draw-head in an opposite direction, and an operating mechanism, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES GEERY.
