GAR GOUPLINGl LINK.
No. 249,377, l Patented Nov. 8,1881.
, UNITED STATES V the city of Chicago,
HERMANN E. w. LIEBMANN, oE cHIoIIGo, ILLINoIs,
PATENT OFFICE.
ASS-IGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO HERMANN RENDTORFF, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING LINK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,377, dated November 8, 1881.
Application filed September 27, 1881. (No model.) d
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. F. W. LIEBMANN, of county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements inACoupling-Links for Gars, of wliichmthe following is a specification.
My inven tion-relates to an improvement upon such coupling-links as are commonly used for coupling freight and other cars for railroads. One end ot' such links is usually inserted into one ofthe draw-heads and apin passed down through it and the link, while the other end is `held and guided by the hand up o r down or sidewise,
in order to secure its entrance into the other draw-head as it approaches to be coupled.
My improvement consists of providing a strong cross-bar for the link, which is oblong in form, not only to render the link stronger, but also to furnish a bearing or base for a handle,wl1ich may be made in one piece with such cross-bar 5 or it may extend through a hole in it above and below the cross-bar sufficiently for the-convenience of the operator.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents perspectives ot' two draw-heads and my improved link in position in one ot' the draw-heads, and Fig.2 a central vertical section of the two drawheads and the link in position after coupling has been effected.
C and O' are the draw-heads, and B a pin inserted down through draw-head() and one end of link A, which is oblong in form, and is divided into two equal compartments by a broad and strong cross-bar, D, which is designed not only to strengthen the link, but also to furnish a proper base and bearing for the handle a, which extends so far above and so far below the link and draw-heads as to enable the operator toseize hold of it, either above or becoup- 13, 1862, for improvement in shackles for railroad-cars, showsa link withoutacross-bar, and provided with a half-link extending across and above the main link, and attached to the sides of the same mid way its length and that W. E. Twinin g, in his like Letters Patent, dated March 24, 1868,for a car-coupling, shows an oblong link without a central cross-bar, but having two bars or handles, one on each side, extendingout laterally from the sides of the link; and that W. W. Haver, in his like Letters Patent, dated September 16, 1873, for a car-coupling, shows alink provided with a cross-bar designed to support a short standard, which is slotted to bear an arm, a short shaft, and another arm, and a pivoted rod, by means ot' all ot' which the link can have merely vertical motion irnparted to it in the act of coupling and uncoupling; and I disclaim these three several constructions', and
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rlhe combination of the link A, provided with the strong central crossbar, D, and the handle a, fixed into the cross-bar and extending so far above and below the draw-heads as to enable the operator to take hold of it in the act of coupling and guide the free end ofthe link with safety, and the draw-heads G and G', substantiallyas described.
