CAR-COUPLING.

Be it known that I, J OSEPH T. HAMMICK, of Ithinebcck, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in C-anCouplings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to he had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of one part of my improved car-coupling and a part of a car to which it is attached, a part of the cord-cap being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the cap and canroof being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken through the line :0 at, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional front elevation of the same, taken through line 3 y, Fig. 2, and parts of the cord-caps being broken away.
The object of this invention is to provide car-couplings constructed in such a manner that the cars can be coupled without goingbetween them, and can be uncoupled from the top or either side of the ear, and which shall be simple in construction, strong and durable in use, and comeniently operated.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the carcoupiing,as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
A represents the body of acur, to which the drawbar B is secured in the ordinary manner.
To the forward end of the draw-bar B is secured the stationary draw head 0, against the forward side of which fits a movable drawhead, D.
To the side parts of the movable draw-head D are attached the forward ends of two rods, E, which pass back through guide-holes in the side parts oi the stationary draw-head C and in the block or in gs F, formed upon or attached to the sides of the rear part of the draw-bar B.
G is the coupling-pin, which passes through a hole in the forward part of the draw-bar B, is made oval in cross-section, and is arranged with its longest diameter in the direction of the line of draft. Theupperpart of the coup-.

forward end of the lifting-block H, and is secured to the forward end of the lifting'plate I. The rear end of the liiting-block H is hinged to the rear part of the draw-bar B by a rod or bolt, J, passing through the said rear end and through eyebolts or staples K, secured to the said draw-bar B, or by other suitable means.
Through a hole in the lifting'block H, at a little distance from its rcarend, is passed the middle part of a rod, L, the end parts of which are bent downward, and their ends are bent inward and inserted in holes in the sliding bars E, or are otherwise pivoted to the said bars. The arms of the bent rod or bail L are made of such a length that the lifting-block H will lie upon the upper side of the draw-bar B when the sliding bars E are at the forward end and at the rear end of their movement, and will be at its highest pointof elevation when the said sliding bars are at the central point of their movement.
The rear end of the liftingplate I is bent upward at right angles, or nearly at right angles, and is pivoted to a rod or bolt, M, the
ends of which are secured to the upper parts of posts or flanges N, formed upon or attached to the sides of the rear part of the draw-bar B. WVhen the lifting-plate I is made light, its bent rear part may be strengthened by an inclined brace, 1, formed upon or attached to it, as shown in Fig. 3.
The rise of the forward end of the liftingplate I is limited by a rod or bolt, 0, attached to the flanges N in such a position that the angle of the said plate will come in contact with the said rod when the said plate is fully raised.
With this construction,when cars are to be coupled, the movable draw-head l) and the sliding bars E are drawn forward, by means of a ring, P, or other handle attached to the lower edge of the said draw-head, into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Then as the cars are run together the link of the adjacent car enters the opening in the movable drawhead D, and the said movable draw-head is pushed back by the draw-head oi the said adjacent car. The rearward movement of the draw-head D raises the lifting-block and plate H I and the pin G, and as the end of the entering link passes the said pin the said pin and liftingblocl; and plate are again lowered,
'thepin G passing through the said link and coupling the cars.
The forward movement of the draw-head D and bars E is limited by pins Q,attached to the bars E, and which come in contact with the rear side of the stationary draw-head O.
The movable draw-head D is lockedagainst an accidental forward movement when the cars are coupled by a bolt, R, sliding in keepers attached to the rear side of the stationary draw-head O, and which, when the draw-heads C D are in contact, drops into ahole, S, in the sliding bar in. \Vhen the draw-head D is out of contact with the draw-head G, the lower end of the said bolt R rests and slides upon the upper side of the bar E, ready to again drop into the hole S when the draw-heads D 0 again come into contact. The bolt R must be raised before the draw-head D can be drawn forward.
To the rear parts of the flanges N is pivoted a bent lever, T, the lower arm of which extends downward and forward into such a position as to be beneath the angle of the lifting-plate I when the said plate is in its lowest'position, so that the said lifting-plate can be raised to raise the pin G and uncouple the cars by operating the said lever T.
To the upper end of thelever T is attached the end of a cord or chain, U, which passes back beneath the floor of the platform or forward end of the car, passes around a pulley, V, pivoted to a support at the lower edge of the end of the car-body A, passes up along the end of the car-body through a guide-tube or hole in the roof of the said car-body, and to its upper end is attached a ring, W, or other handle, for convenience in operating the said cord or chain.
To the upper end of the cord or chain U is also attached a cap, X, to cover the hole through the ear-roof and prevent it from being filled and the free movement of the cord or chain U, prevented by snow, ice, or other obstruction.
To the cord or chain U at the lower part of the end of the car-body A are attached the ends of two cords or chains, Y, which pass over two pulleys, Z, pivoted to the end of the car-body A at the opposite sides of the cord or chain U. The cords or chains Y pass along the end of the car-body A, and through guide holes at the sides of the said car-body, as indicated in Fig. 4, and to the ends of the said cords or chains are attached rings a or other handles for convenience in operating the said cords or chains.
By this construction',by operating the cords or chains U Y from the top or either side of the car, the lever 'I will be operated to raise the lifting-plate I and pin G for uncoupling the cars.
The distance to which the coupling-link enters the draw-bar is limited by a block, I), placed within the said draw-bar and recessed upon its forward side to receive and rest upon the end of the coupling-link, so that by drawing the said block b downward the forward end of the said coupling-link can be raised to guide it into the draw-head of an adjacent car. The lower part of the recessed block b, or arms formed upon the said block, projects through the lower part of the draw-bar B. and to it is pivoted the forward arm of the elbow-lever c, which is pivoted at its angle to a recessed block, d, attached to the lower side of the draw-bar B, and which serves as a guard to cover and protect the lower end of the block b and the lever c. The recessed block b is held up to prevent it from resting upon the end of the coupling-link by a spring, 6, connected with the lower part of the said block b, and with the lower side of the draw-bar B. To the lower arm of the elbow-lever c is attached the end of a cord or chain,f, which passes back below the draw-bar B, passes around a pulley, g, pivoted to a support attached to the bottom of the car-body beneath the end of the said car-body, passes up along the said end of the ear-body, and to its upper end are attached two cords or chains, h. The cords or chains h pass over two pulleys, i, pivoted to the end of the car-body A, pass along the said end of the car-body and pass out through guide-holes at the sides of the carbody, and have rings j or other handles at tached to their ends for convenience in operating them. By this construction, by operating the cords or chains hf from either side of the car, the elbow-lever c and the recessed block b can be operated to guide the end of the coupling-link into the draw-head of an adjacent car.
The pulleys and cords or chains at the end of the carbody are covered and protected by caps 70, attached to the said end.
The rear ends of the lifting-block H and the lifting-plate I are covered and protected by the plates Z m. The plate Z is stationary, and is attached to the rear edges of the flanges N. The plate at is hinged at its rear end to the upper parts of the flanges N, and its forward end rests upon the upper side of the lifting-plate I, so that the said forward end will move up and down with the said liftingplate I, and can be turned back to give access to the rear ends of the lifting-block H and liftingplate I when required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the draw-bar B, having perforated lugs F.
and flanges N, the stationary draw-head 0, having side apertures, and the coupling-pin G, of the movable draw-head D, the bars E, attached to the said movable draw-head and sliding in the perforated stationary draw-head and the side lugs, the lever-bail L, hinged to the sliding bars, the block H, hinged to the draw-bar and to the lever-bail, and provided with a perforation to receive the coupling-pin, and the hinged angular plate I, resting upon the hinged block and connected with the IIO coupling-pin, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the coupling-pin will be raised and lowered by the movements of the said movable draw-head and sliding bars, as set forth.
2v In a cnr'conpling, the combination, with the hinged angular plate I, the conplingpin G, connected therewith, and the ear-body A, of the bent lever T, the cords or chains U Y Y, and the guide pulleys V Z Z. substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said angular plate can be operated to raise the said coupling-pin and nncouple the cars from the top or sides of the car, as set forth.
In a oar-coupling, the combination, with the draw-bar B and the car-body A, cf the recessed blocklr, the spring 6, holding the said block up, the elbow-lever 0, connected with the said recessed block, and the cords or chains f h h, connected with the said elbowand the guide-pulleys g it, connected with the said car-body, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said reeessed block can be operated from the sides of the ear to guide the coupling-link into the draw-head of an adjacent car, as set forth.
4. In a carconpling, the combination, with the stationary draw-head G and the sliding bar E, carrying the movable draw-head D, and having perforation S, of the bolt R, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said sliding bar and movable draw-head are held from being drawn forward l1 and uncoupling the cars accidentally, as set forth.
