Description

(NoModeL) E. G. EYL.
GAR COUPLING. No. 275,177. 7 Patented Apr. 3,1883.
WITNESSES; v gNvnguTon @yM I BY M ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OF CE.
EMIL O. EYL, OF JEFFERSON CITY, MONTANA TERRITORY.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,177, dated April 3, 1883. Application filed August 31, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL G. EYL, of Jefi'erson City, in the county of Jefl'erson and Territory of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Ooupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in car-couplings, having for its object to effect the ready coupling and uncoupling of the cars; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of the T-headed coupling-hook and its adjuncts. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hook-jaws. a plan of the hook-jaws. Fig. 4. is asection of Fig. 3 on line as as. Fig. 5 is a section of Fig. 1 on line 3 3 Fig. 6 is a section of the coupling-jaws on line a z, Fig. 5, and a side elevation of the two draw-bars and the couplinghook.
a represents the T-headed coupling-hook. It is pivoted atb in the slotted draw-bar c, attached to the car-body d, the rear end of said hook being supported, as at 6, Figs. 5 and 6, so as to hold the projecting head up level for self-coupling.
The hook-headed jawsfare pivoted at g to each other and to the draw-bar h, so as to open laterally by the head a for self-coupling, and they are provided with the spiral spring *5 for closing them. The openingj for the head a. is suitably arranged for the head to uncouple by lilting out of it, and the coupling may also he efi'ected when the draw-bars of the two cars are close together by letting the hook a drop down into said opening, for which said hook Fig. 3ishas a chain,j, extending to the top of the car, that may be used for both purposes by a person on the car.
In order to couple and uncouple from the side of the car, I have a bail, k, hinged to the car at l to swing the hook a. up; and in order that the same device may also be employed for swinging the hook down, Iarrange the rods m on it 1n eyes 12, located so as to guide the rods m into the hole 0 of the hook, to so connect the bail and the hook that when the latter is swung up back against the end of the car it may be engaged and swung down by the bail and one of the rods.
It is intended that when the hook a is raised up against the end of the car it will fall far enough back of the pivot b to rest in that position when the car is in motion, and from which it is to be raised by the bail 7c and rod on when coupling the car in that way. A sharp pull up on chain j will thrust the hook out of that position and throw it over the pin b for falling into the hooksf when the operator is on the top of the car. The bail It will be hooked up under the car out of the way when not in use by any suitable contrivance of books.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a car-coupling, the combination, with the pivoted coupling hook or bar a, of the bail k, hung at the under side of the car-platform, and adapted to extend beneath the said bar or hook, and the handled rod m, passed through the coupling hook or bar a and through c es n of the bail k, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
EMIL C. EYL.
