Laim Puma No. 100,837, aaa March v15,1sr0.
IMPRVED RAILWAY-:CAR COUPLIN'G.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all fwhomct may concern Beit known that I, SAMUEnJoNns ANDERSON, of Cazenovia, in the county of Madison, and State of "New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in` Oar-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in'4 the art to make and use the same', reference being `had to the accom- .l panyingvdrawings forming part of this specification, in
which-f-l 4. Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved car-coupling, taken through-the line n: x, iig. 2.
Figure 2 is a top view of the saine. 1 Similar letters of' reference indicate corresponding l parts.
My invention has for its object to` furnish an im-v proved car-coupling, which shall couple the cars by means of' the ordinary coupling-pin, which shall be self-coupling, and which will uncouple itself, should one orniore of the cars run orbethrown froml the track,
andwhich shall at the same time be simple' in con struction and reliable in use; 'and I 1 -It consists in the constructiouand combination of various parts of the coupling, as hereinafter 'more fully described. l
A vis the bumper-head, which is made broader and of about the .same rdepth as the ordinary bumperhead. The mouth of the bumper-head is beveled off or` made hoppef-shapedin the ordinary manner, to guide the coupling-link into place when the cars are B is the coupling-pin, which is made long, and which passes down through a. tubular guide, C, attached to the upper part ofthe bumper-head-- A, to keep the pin B always in averticalposition.
D is a plate sliding in grooves upon" the under side of the top part of the bumper-head- A, and which is movedv back and forward by a pin or arm, E, lattached to its rear end, and projecting through a slotvin the toppart of the bumper-A, as shown in gs. 1 and 2. The plate D is designed to be moved forward when the coupling-pin Bis wthdrawmto support the said pin ready to drop through the link, when the cars are run together. V y Y,
The rear end of the kplate D is bent downward, or
'has a downwardly-projecting `flange, F, formed upon it, against which the entering link strikes when the cars are run together, pushing the plate D, and allow' ing thepin B to drop. through the link, coupling the-` cars.- Y
QWhen it is desired to have the cars run together without-being coupled, the plate G, that slides in the same grooves `as the plate D, and in front of the said plate D, is pushed` back, so that the-pin B may rest tn bcs G and H, andthe lower end of whichissecured in the lower part 'of the said space. V:The spring I., when compressed into the space between `the tubes C and H, is secured in place by l they catches J, the hooked upper, ends of which rest upon the upper ends of the spring I, so as to hold it. The lower parts of the catches J rest upon and are secured to the upper part of the bumper A, by bolts which pass through slots inthe said bumper.4 I
The catches J are also connected with the levers K by boltswhich pass through slots in the upper part of thesaid bumper A.
-The levers K extend along the sides of' the cavity of the bumper Ain such positions that the coupling- -link will not touch the said .levers while the `cars `are upon the track, even when going around the shortest curves. V The inner ends of the levers K are pivoted to the 'bumper-head A, and their outer ends have guideplates K attached .to them, which project through 'holes in the sides of the bumper, the design of said plates `being to protect the ends of the levers, and guard against the possibility of t-heend of the entering link injuring the said levers o1 entering behind l them.
The levers K are connected4 to each other and. made I to move together bythe connecting-bars Land lever M.
The outer ends of the bars L are connectedl lto the levers K by bolts passing lthrough `slots in Athe lower part of the bumper, and their inner ends are pivoted to the ends of the equal-armed lever M, which is pivoted at its central point to` the lower part of the bumper A. Y y
N. is the coupling-link, which is made similar to the ordinary link, except that its ends project, as shown in rigs. 1 and 2,' to morecertainly operate the sliding plate D, and also to hold thelink in a horizontal position,- ready to enter tbe bumper of the adjacent car, when thecarsare run together.
The `head of the pin B is made broad, so asi'to cover the -upper ends of the two, tubes, O and H, so that when the spring I is released by the drawing back of venting the other cars fromV being dragged from the track.k rlhe levers K may be held forward by coiled or equivalent springs placed behind them, to prevent the said levers andthe catches operated by them from being jarred out of place.
Having thus described my inrention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patent- 1. The combination of the slide G with the sliding plate D E F, coupling-pin B, and bumper-head A,
substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set: forth,
2. The spring I, catches J, levers K K', connecting- SAML. J. ANDERSON. Witnesses:
