JAMES ELI AMENT, OF NOKOMIS, ILLINOIS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,825, datedl July 5, 1881.
Application filed May 2, 1881. (Model.) J
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ELI AMENT, of Nokomis, in the county of Montgomery, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication.
This invention relates to certain improvements in car-couplers; and it has for its objects to provide a coupling by means of which two cars may be automatically coupled upon coming together, and uncoupled by suitable mechanism, Without requiring the attendant in either case to pass between the cars, thus obviating the danger attendant upon the ordinary conplers. These objects I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a car, showing my improved coupling. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of one of the coupler-heads. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a transverse sectional view, of the same.
The letter A indicates the draw-bar, which is provided at the end with a coupling-head, B, of the ordinary or any approved construction. The said head is provided with a transverse rectangular opening, C, in which is seated a transverse bar, D, which is provided with upwardly-extending pins E, which work in apertures F in the top of the coupling-head. The said transverse bar is beveled in front, as indicated by the letter Gr, so thatit will be automatically lifted upon the entrance of the link H.
The bar is held and returned to a normal position by means ot' the spiral springs I encompassing the pins E.
The letter K indicates two projecting pins, one extending from each end oi' the bar D, to which is fastened'a bail, L, by means of which the bar may be elevated. The said bail, when the coupling is in place upon a car, is connected to an upright rod, M, which is secured to the end of an operating-lever, N, on the top of the car, by means of which the cars may be uncoupled.
Having thus described my invention, what in presence of two witnesses this 6th day of 65 April, 1881. v
