GAR GOUPLING. No. 296,957. Patented Apr. 15, 1884.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. HATHAWAY, OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,957 dated April 15, 1884.
Application filed February 23, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. HATHAWAY, of Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a passenger-car provided with my improved coupling. Fig.
2 is a similar view of a freight-car provided with the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of two coupled draw-heads detached from the car. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal horizontal section of one of the draw-heads. Fig. 5 is atop view, and Fig. 6 is a side view, of a drawhead.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of automatic car-couplings in which two arrowhead draw-heads catch into each other, and it contemplates certain improvements in the carcoupling for which Letters Patent No. 285,616 were granted to me on the 25th day of September, 1883; and it consists to that end in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully shown and set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A indicate the draw-heads, which are of the same construction as the draw-heads described in my former patent, forming shoulders B, having sliding bolts D, hinged to the inner ends of levers E, having connecting-rods F, hinged to the outer ends of levers G, .to which the rectangular bailsH are secured, rocking with them, all of which parts are of the same construction as the corresponding parts shown and described in my former patent, perform the same functions, and will consequently not need any further description. The inner end of the lever G is curved rearward, as shown at (No model.)
I, and projects into an eye, J, formed in the inner end of a bar, K, which projects into the recess L, in which the lever is pivoted, sliding with its inner end in a slot, M, in the side of the draw-bar, and the inner end ofthis bar is provided with a lug or enlargement, N, at its inner end, which will be brought to bear against the inner side of the slot when the bar is drawn out to the side. A cord or chain, 0, is attached to the outer end of this sliding bar, the other end of which chain is attached to the operatingbar P, which, in afi'eigl1t-ca1*,issliding laterally, as shown in Fig. 2, while in a passenger-car the operating-bar is preferably pivoted to form a lever, as shown in Fig. 1. A spring, Q, is attached with one end to the other side of the draw-head and with its other end to the car, serving to draw the draw-heads toward each other; and it will be seen that when the chain attached, to the sliding bar is pulled the sliding bar will be drawn out, tilting the outer end of the rectangular bail rearward until the lug upon the inner end of the bar strikes the inner side of the slot, when the,
bar and its chain will draw the draw-head to one side, allowing the other draw-head to be withdrawn.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the draw-head forming the shoulder having the spring-bolt, the lever pivoted to the same, the connecting-rod, and the lever and rectangular bail; with the sliding bar fitting with its eyed inner end upon the curved inner end of the lever, having alug or enlargement upon its inner end sliding in a slot in the side of the draw-head, and having means for pulling it out to the side, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
