CAR-COUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 268,905, dated December 12, 1882. Application filed April 24, 1882. (Model) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANKLIN W. KELLY,
of Vermontville, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Coupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in a U-shaped rod passed through the bottom of the draw-head. into the cavity, on the-oross-piece of which U IO shaped rod an eye is looselymounted,to which eye a lever is pivoted, which is also pivoted to the draw-head or a projection of the same, whereby the U-shaped rod will raise the link in the cavity in the draw-head by pulling this 1 lever downward.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved carcoupling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same.
The draw-head A is provided with a cavity, B, open at the front and top, the bottom of this cavity being inclined from the inner to the outer end, as shown in Fig. 2. At theinner end of the cavity a recess, U, is formed, above which a tongue, D, projects, which tongue extends transversely across the cavity B. A longitudinal ridge, E, projects upward from the bottom of the cavity B in such a manner thatthis ridge will be free on all sidesthat is, there will be a space between this 5 ridge and the sides of the draw head.- A curved recess, F, is formed in the upper front or outer corner of the ridge E, and the front edge of the ridge is slightly rounded or beveled. The link G is provided with a middle cross-piece, H. A U-shaped rod, J, passes through the bottom of the draw-head into the cavity, one shank of the U-shaped rod being at each side of the ridge E. The bottom crosspiece of the U-shaped rod J passes through a 5 loop, K, pivoted to the lower end of a curved or bent lever, L, pivoted to the draw-head or to a short arm, M, projecting from the bottom it of the draw-head at one side.
The operation is as follows: If the cars are to be coupled, the inner end of the link G is car. cars can be coupled automatically, and can be 70 passed into the recess Otunder the tongue D, and the cross-rod H of the link is placed in the recess F, so that, the link will be held inclined upward and-outward from the drawhead. It the two draw-heads comein contact, the shock throws the link over the ridge E of the disengaged draw head, and the cars will be coupled, as the ridges of both draw-heads will pass through the link G, as shown in Fig. 1. If the cars are to beuncoupled, the leverL of one of the draw-heads is drawn down in the direction of the arrow a, whereby the U,- shaped rod J will be raised into the cavity,- and will push upward or raise thelink to clear the ridge of the draw-head in which the link. is raised. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
