UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMERSON E. VVINSTEAD, OF DRESDEN, TENNESSEE.
HAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,497, dated April 8, 1884:.`
Application led November-10, 1883. (No modeLl To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERSON E. WINSTEAD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dresden, in the county of Weakley and State of Tennessee have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Haines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refereneebeing had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiieation, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved haine. Fig. 2 is a front view oi' part of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side view of the lock-fastening for the trace-hook.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of haines in which the heme-strap and the tracehook may be adjusted to suit different-sized collars; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the adjustablelock-fastening for the trace-hook, as
hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In'the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the haine, having at its upper end a series of bails, B, in which the hame-strap may be inserted, according to the size of collar which the hame is intended to iit. At the lower end the haine is provided with a bail, C, through which the fastening-strap passes, or it may have any othersuit'able fasten.
ing. A plate, D, is secured upon the front side of the hame, and is provided at equal distances with a number of parallel projecting steps or lugs, E, which have eyes or perforations FV near their forward ends, through which perforations a lock bolt or rod, G, is removably inserted, having a head or knob, H, at its upper end, which prevents it from passing through the perforations, and provided with a spring-catch, H', below the head, adapted to bear with its free projecting end against the under side of the uppermost of the series of perforated steps or projections E, through which the bolt is inserted.
I is the trace-hook, which is dat and of the same width as the distance between two of the steps, and has a transverse eye or aperture, J, at its inner end, through which the lock-bolt is inserted, thus hinging the hook upon the haine between two adjacent steps-or lugs E E. In this manner it will be seen that by pressing the free end ofthe spring-catch' against bolt G and withdrawing the bolt, removing the hook from between its two steps, inserting it between two other steps, and again insertlng the lock-bolt, the hook may be adjusted to bring the line of draft to its proper point, and the hook fitting snugly between two adjacent steps, the said steps will bear all lateral draft upon the hook, preventing it from bending the lock-bolt, which might easily happen if the hook were not supported upon both sides.
I am aware that hames have been constructed before withlaterally/projecting steps, or a plate having laterally-projecting steps, in combination with an adjustable trace-hook adapted to iit between the steps, and held in place by arod inserted through'the steps and through a groove or an eye in the body of the hoolr; neither do I claim such construction, broadly, but
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
'The combination, with the hame having plate D, provided with the projecting perforated steps E, and trace-hook I, having eye J, of the removable lock-bolt G, constructed with v the spring-catch H below its head H, whereby the bolt is locked, removably, between the upper and under side of the topmost step or projectiomas shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
` EMERSON n. winsfrnAD.
