In the manufacture `of button-fasteners in` accordance with my invention, I takea piece of Wire of propernumber or gage andstiffness and bend.` the same into the form represented in Fig. 1, so as to form ahead or base, a, a shank, b, having a part of `it (marked b) `recurved or bent backward to constitute a loop for the `reception of the shank c of a but'- ton, c2,` the wire constituting the fastener being `bent or curved at 'd to form a foot, d2,
which normally stands in a position nearly parallel with the inner side of the head or base a, the said foot in practice preferably turning or inelining slightly downward, so that as the part b and foot are pressed backward toward the part b of the shank, as will be described, the free extremity of the :foot` Will press hard upon the surface of the material m without penetrating the latter. y It Will be noticed that the so-called foot d2 is made to project laterally from the shank beyond the boundary or periphery of the head or base,
the under side of the said foot being distant from the inner side of the said head in excess of the thickness of the material through which the fastener is to be inserted, so that when inserted and brought into the position Fig. 3 sufficient space Will be left-between theuuder side of the said foot and the materialv for the passage of the shank of the button under the said foot and into the looped part of the shank' of the fastener, as shown in Fig. 4. After applying the button as in Fig. 4, the shank of 10o the fastener will be grasped between pliers such as shownin Fig. 6; having thin edgesff,
and the fastener-shank acted vupon by the edges of the pliers at the points marked2 3, Fig. 4, will be closed to occupy the position Fig. 5, and during such operation the foot d?. will be brought down against and carried backward toward the main part b of the shank of the fastener, as will be the part b', and the foot will be'made to bear snugly against the surface of the material; and on the arrival of the said foot into a position directly over or above the head or base a the material will be clamped between the said foot and head or base, the passage of the foot inward over the edge of the head or base acting to Vdraw the shankof the fastener farther through the material and the inner side of the head a snugly against and so as to partially embed the said head into the under side of the material m.
W'hen the fastener is to be appliedto the material, it is presented ,atthe under side thereof with the free end of the foot d? and the inner face of the'head a at lright angles thereto, and the pointed end of the foot will be pushed through a small round h ole made in the saidmaterial by an awl or pin,and the point of the said foot having been entered into the material lfrom its under side np to the 'junction of the foot with the part Vbof the fastener-shank, thefastener` .will be oscillated or turned over in the direction of the arrow 3, thus forcing the shank parts b b, Arespectively,throu gh the Amaterial into the-position shown in Fig. 3. After the part d2 is carried back to clamp` the material, as n Fig. 4, the looped part of the shank at the junction of the parts Vb b will occupy'a nearly central position with relation to the base, so that the strain of the button is exerted on the fastener at its center.
As aniinproved article of manufacture, the button-fastener herein shown and described, it consisting of a single piece of wire bent or coiled to form the base a, and loop-like infurther bent to form a foot, di, all being constructed and adapted to operate as set forth.
