Description

. TINTTED STATES PATENT QEErcE.
FRED. W. PRATT, OF 'IVASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
PAPER-FILE BOX.
SPECIFICATION! forming part of Letters Patent'No. 294,268, dated February. 26, 1884.
Application filed June 4. 1 883. (No model.)
To col/Z whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED. \V. PRATT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of \Vashington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in PaperFile Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a file-box constructed, as fully described hereinafter, so that it may be moved in and out of a file-case, like an ordinary drawer, and also capable of being turned to a vertical or inclined position without be ing disconnected from the case.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the case, showing two compartmentsand the improved boxes. Fig. 2 is a detached sectional view of part of one of the boxes. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the part shown in Fig. 2, and Figs. 4 and 5 are side views showing modifications.
The box consists of two main parts.the re; ceptacle A, having the bottom a, end I), and sides (I, and otherwise constructed in any suitable manner, and the end section, B, which may be a solid thick block, as shown in Fig. 5, or an L-shaped piece, asshown in the remaining figuresthe two sections being hinged together at 00, either by an ordinary hinge, as
shown in Figs. 4 and 5, or by any other suitable connection. In Figs. 1, 2, 3 the section B is a light frame of cast metal supporting a cross-bar, c, to which is hung a leaf, f, connected to the end of the bottom a of the re ceptacle A. XVhatever may bethe construction and mode of hinging together these two sections, the connection is such that when the receptacle A is brought to a horizontal position in line with the section B the two sections constitute a drawer, in which papers may be deposited in the usual manner, which may be slid back and forth in the compartment Y- of a file-case, and which is further capable of having the front portion, A, turned down to an inclined or vertical position, while the rear portion, B, remains within the compartment, and serves as a holder and support for the other section, a stop device, 0, in such case limiting the outward movement of the section B.
In order that the same casting may serve for the construction of boxes of different heights, the vertical portion of the section B may be made in twoparts, the upper part, 71, being adjustable vertically, and secured by a screw, 9, or otherwise, to the lower portion.
To limit the movement of the receptacle A, so that it will retain an inclined position when opened, the two parts may be connected by hinged arms M, which may be differently arranged, as shown, and will fold up, as shown at the top in Fig. 1, or will extend to a limited degree, as shown at the bottom of said figure; or a shoulder, s, on the leaf f may be" arranged so as to strike a shoulder on the sec tion B when the receptacle Ais in the desired position.
Without limiting myself to the precise eonstruction shown, I claim- 1. A file-box consisting of a receptacle having closed sides, bottom, and ends, and divided transversely into two sections hinged together, adapted to slide into the compartment of a file-case, and a stop limiting the sliding motion of the rear section, substantially as set forth.
2. A file-box consisting of an outer section. constituting the receptacle for the papers, an inner section hinged to the outer section at the bottom thereof, and adapted to support the same when withdrawn from the case, and means for limiting the .downward movement of the outer section when so withdrawn, and the sliding movement of the inner section, substantially as set forth. p
3. A filebox composed of two sections, A B, hinged together at the bottom, and provided with means, substantially as described,
for limiting the movement of the outer'in respect to the inner section, substantially as described.
4. The inner section of a-file-box, hinged to the outer section, consisting of two pieces, the upper of which is connected adjustably to the lower, for the purpose specified.
5. The combination, in a file-box, of a rear section, B, a leaf, f, hinged directly to the bottom thereof, and a receptacle connected to the leaf, substantially as set forth.
2 emcee 6. The combinatioinin afile-box, of the sec sections, the end of the inner section being 10 made adjustable, substantially as described.
tions A B, hinged together, and jointed arms In testimony whereof Ihztve signed my name i 17, for limiting the movement of the outer seev tion, substantially as set forth. to this specification in thepresence of two sub- 7. The combination, with a file-ease proscribing witnesses. vided with stops, as c, of sliding file-boxes, each consisting of two sections hinged togeth- XVitnesses: er, and provided with devices, substantially as described, for limiting the movement of the FRED. W. PRATT.
