Description

Nrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIPP GOTTHEIMER, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
PANTS OR DRAWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,032, dated February 26, 1884.
useful Improvements in Pants and Drawers, of
which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide drawers and similar articles of wearing-apparel with such curved seams and manner of forming and re-enforcing certain parts thereof that the same shall fitbetter and more comfortably, and shall be stronger or more durable at certain points most liable to rip, tear, or give way as heretofore constructed and now in 1 general use; and my invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims.
Figure 1 represents an elevation of the in ner faces or surfaces between the legs of a pair of drawers constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is asimilar view of the same with the addition of stay or re-en force pieces. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, showing double stay or re-enforce pieces.-
This invention more particularly belongs to that class of drawers cut from woven fabric, and formed with seams to allow a more perfect fit, and which seams are stayed or re-eno forced by extra pieces stitched thereon, to
"strengthen the same against undue strain and wear.
A represents the main portion of the body and outside of the legs, there being no seam formed up the outside of the legs, and a seam at the center of the body behind extending downward through the crotch to the opening in front, as usual. It will be seen and understood that I dispense with the outside seam of 0 the leg, as usually employed; and in order to give the required fullness over the calf of the leg and remove all surplus material above the knee, I join the curved inside leg-piece, B, to, the back legseam, Commencing at the 5 bottom of the leg, at the back side, the seam curves outward on a line conforming to the shape of the calf, P, of the leg to a point just above the knee-j oint, then extends on a slight curve inwardly or between the legs, and termi- (No model.)
nates in the crotch, as shown; or, if desired, it may be cut so as to terminate at a point on the side seam, or on any point on the seat or inside of the leg, or may be extended to the waistband, or terminate at any point on the hip. The front edge of this curved piece 13 commences at the seam inside of the leg, at the opening in front, extending downward on a curve somewhat corresponding to the back leg-seam before described to the bottom, as shown, where an opening may be left up a short distance, and finished with a band adapted to be buttoned around the ankle, as now in use, or in any suitable manner. Now, in order to strengthen the seam at the crotch, commencing at the bottom of the front opening, I stitch over the said seam the two reenforce pieces 0. The narrow forward and upper ends, 6, of the said re-enforce crotchpieces 0 cross each other, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and are thoroughly stitched across the seam and across each other at this point, upon which great strain is brought to bear when such drawers or pants are being put on,wl1ereby the seams, when constructed in the common manner, are very liable to rip or tear down. This crotch re-enforce piece 0 extends toward the rear sufficiently to strengthen the seat against excessive strain and undue wear when applied in practical use asan undergarment; and it will be obvious that these reenforce pieces may be applied to the crotch of the drawers upon the inside of the same, or upon pants or other similar garments, as may be found desirable.
Having thus described my invention, what.
