To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES A. PARK, of Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to buckles, the object being to provide a buckle of cheap and durable construction, adapted to be readily secured to a strap without any stitching or sewing of the leather, and in such a manner as to securely retain the strap against movement or displacement.

The invention consists, primarily, in a novel construction of frame and cross-bars, whereby one or more thicknesses of strap may be held by forming abend or kink therein between the cross-bars of the buckle, with or without a stud inserted through the strap.

The invention further consists in the details of construction and the parts and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a buckle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same applied to a strap. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate modifications.

A represents the frame of the buckle, consisting of the slightly-curved central side portions, (1 a, and the downwardly-turned ends I) b.

B is a central bar, carrying the pivoted tongue 0, and having a stud, c, projecting from its upper side.

D D represent cross-bars, arranged one on each side of the bar B and at the ends of the curved side portions of the frame, to leave loops E E between said bars D D and the end bars of the frame. The tongue 0 is forked or bifurcated to form arms 0 0 which are bent around the central bar, B, one on either side of the stud c.

The buckle is applied to a strap in the fol lowing manner: One end a: of the strap, Fig. 2, is passed under the bars D D and above the central bar, B, where the stud c enters a hole in the strap and retains the latter. The other end so of the strap is then passed over the end w of the strap and under the bars D D, forming a loop, F. The bend or kink A in the strap between the bars prevents the buckle from slipping while the upper strap, .70, holds the lower strap, .90, upon the stud a.

It will be apparent that the strap may be of any length required, and that the same may be readily applied to the buckle Without stitching or sewing or riveting.

Figs. 3 and 4 represent my improved buckle without the projecting stud c. In this modi fication the cross-bars D D are arranged closer to the central bar, B, than in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that the strap may be held by the kink or bend A My improved buckle may be manufactured and supplied to the trade at a small cost in view of its simplicity of construction, and is well adapted, by reason of its durability, for use with harness and other manufactures requiring straps and buckles.

Having fully describedmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A buckle consisting of a frame having curved sides a a, cross-bars D D, arranged, respectively, at the ends of the sides a a, downwardly-turned end loops, and a crossbar, B, arranged centrally between the bars D D upon the curved sides, and provided with a pivoted tongue, substantially as set forth.

2. A buckle consisting of a frame having curved sides ac, cross-bars D D, arranged, respectively, at the ends of the sides a a, downwardly-turned end loops, E E, a cross-bar and pivoted tongue, and a rigid stud, substantially as set forth.
