SPECIFICATION forming part of. Letters Patent No. 293,424, dated February 12, 1884,.
Application filed July 6, 1883. (Model.) v
, 5 have invented a new and Improved Extensible Latch-Bolt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. l
The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved latchebolt for locks, which bolt can be adjusted to extend or project a greater or less distance from the edge of the lock casing, as the circumstances may require.
The invention consists of the novel construction, hereinafter described'and claimed. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.` 2o Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a lock provided with our improved latch-bolt, showing the same in the usual position in relation to the casing. Fig. 2 is a like view, showing` the bolt adapted to pro- 25 ject a greater distance from the lock-casing.
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan viewl of the same. rPhe sliding latch-bolt A, held in the lockcasing B, is composed of the following three parts: The outer block, C, held in an opening in the edge of the casing, and havingits outer end beveled in the usual manner, a screw, D, having a head, E, at one end, and having its opposite end screwed int-o the third part of the bolt-namely, a tubular piece, F, `provide'd at its end with a fork, G, between the shanks of which the nut H is held, which fork is provided at the ends of the Shanks with projections J, on which the cross-pieceK of the nut can act. A spiral spring, L, surrounding 4o the bolt A, is held between the inner face of the block C, and a plate, N, attached to the casing.
The beveled block C is provided with alon` gitudinal aperture, throughwhich the screw` block C. A square rod, Q, is passed through the usual manner for receiving the beveled the nut, to the ends of which the handle-knobs of the usual construction are fastened.
. The operation is as follows: Doors and their casings frequently warp considerably, and the 5'5 space between the edge of the door and thejainb is so great that the end of the bolt cannot catch in the casing P, and .thus 'does not hold the door closed. As the width between the door-edge and the jamb increases gradu- 6o ally, it is desirable to have a bolt which can be adjusted gradually, so that it will always project from the casing a sufficient distance to catch in the casing P. If the screw D is loosenedor adjusted to project a greater dis- 65 tance from the piece F, the block C will prov ject'a greater distance from the casing. By screwing the screw D farther into the tubular lpiece F the block C can be adjusted to project less fromthelock-casing. A key-bolt can be made extensible in the same manner as the above-described latch-bolt. The block C can be removed entirely from the casing, and can be reversed, so that the lock can be used in either direction. v
Ve donot abandon or dedicate to the pub.- lic any patentable feature set forth herein and not hereinafter claimed, but reserve the right to claim the same either in a reissue of any patent that may be granted upon this appli-` cation or in other appli cations for Letters Patent that we may make. j
We are aware that a lock has heretofore been provided with a forked tumbler, with the forks of which arms on the hub of the knob- 8 5 spindle are adapted to engage to operate the tumbler.
We are also aware that it is not broadly new to form a latch or bolt in two parts connected by a screw for adjusting the length oi' the bolt, and therefore we do not claim these features broadly. v
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire vto secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An extensible latch-bolt consisting of a block swiveled on a screw, and connected by the latter to a piece provided with a screwthreaded aperture, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A latch-bolt consisting of a block, C, provided with a countersink, O, a screw, D, proroo - vided with a head, E, and means for preventhead E and pin a, the bleek C, having Countering the screw from sliding in the block, and of sink O, and the spring L, substantially as 1o a tubular piece, F, provided with a fork, G, shown and described.
substantially as herein shown and described. BROMMIE COPELAND.

jections J and plate N, and having an inter- WILL E. LIDDLE,
Daily-Threaded sleeve, F, the screw D, having M. L. SHELDON.
