LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1906.
Application iiled June '7, 1905'. Serial Noy 264,155.
and. State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention, which relates to improvements in spring or draw-bolt locks, has tor its object the provision of a simple, easily-operated, and highly-eifective lock of the class named which, being entirely composed of cy lindrical and circular shaped parts, may readily be put in place and adjusted on a door by means of an ordinary auger and without the use of chisels or similar tools. I attain this object by the mechanisrnillustrated i'n the accompanying drawings,r in the various views of which like parts are similarly indicated, and in which- Figure represents a vertical section v'through a doorand jamb, showing my lock in place and its casing in section; Fig. 2, a horizontal section taken along the line 2 2, Fig. 1, the draw-bolt, knob, spindle, and, key bolt being shown in elevation Fig. 3, a crosssection along line 3 3, Fig. 2,` looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 4, a cross-section along line 4 4, Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a cross-section along line 5 5, Fig. 2; Fig. 6, a fragmentary Vperspective view of the lower part ofthe key used to' operate the pinion-spindle of my lock, and Fig. 7 a similar view of one of the ex-` tremities of the key-bolt.
My lock comprises a tubular barrel or housing 5 and a cylindrical draw-bolt 6, having a longitudinally-rectilinear reciprocating movement therein and maintained in the extended'or locked position by a tension-spring 7. Bolt 6 is provided at its outer extremity with the square and beveled head 8, normally extending in ay correspondingly-shaped recess 9 in the door-j amb 1.0. This recess, like the other mortises required to place my lock, is made cylindrical and is protected by the strike-plate 11, which may also be made Ycircular in outline. When the bolt is retracted, head 8 enters a correspondingly-shaped recess 12, formed in the enlarged outer extremity 13 of barrel 5. Head 8 being larger than the main body of the bolt forms a shoulder 14, while athumb-screw 15, passing through a cylindrical opening 16 in door 17 projects into a correspondingly-tapped aperture 18 ,6, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 5.
in the enlarged part 13 of casing 5, Screw 15, being located on the inside of the door, constitutes the night-latch, by which the bolt may be locked against retraction by either knob or key. When it is desired to thus secure the door, thumb-screw 15 is turned to project into recess 12in the path oi' the shoulder 14 of head 8, which engaging the protruding end of the screw arrests further inward movement of the bolt. The innermost extremity 19 of bolt 6 has been reduced to form a shoulder 20 for the spiral spring. 7, which being placed around the rej duced portion engages said shoulder and the 6nd plate 21 of barrel'5. The outer extrem ity of the reduced end 19 of the bolt is threaded and projects beyond the end plate 21, where a nut 22, screwed onto said extremity, limits the outward movement of the bolt. Nut 22, furthermore, affords means to regulate the lengt-h of stroke of the bolt as well as the tension of spring 7.
extends through an opening 6a in the casing and engages a rack 27, which extends along the upper surface of bolt 6.
To lock door 17, it is essential that the bolt should -be iirmly held Aagainst linear movement. 'This object may be' accomplished from either side by means of the cylindrical key-bolt 28, which extends transversely of bo t 6 through apertures y29 29 in door 17.
When in the locking position, bolt 28 projects through a l correspondingly-formed notch or recess 30 in the upper surface of bTllt e central. portion of bolt 28, extending over the draw-bolt, has also been provided with a similar recess or depression 31 of a depth sufficient to bring the peripheral surface of the key-bolt out of engagement with the recess in the draw-bolt when the vformer has been turned to bring the two recesses o posite each other. Placed on each side of oor 17 are the customary escutcheons 32, having openings 33, through which the knob-spindle projects, and apertures 34, through which the key 38, operating bolt 28, may be introduced. Apertures 34 extend throughoutwardly-extending cylindrical projections 35 IOO v erably wire, spring Il?,
on the escutcheons, having similarly-shaped recesses 36 on their inner surface 'for the accommodation ot projections 37 on the key 38.
it will be understood that the form or construction of the Working end of the key may loe varied, so that no tufo shall be alike, and that the aperture 34C, a Yell as the apertures 39 in the ends oi the bolt, are 'made to conform with the cons the particular key provided for forni part,
The key, as shown "r drical extremity or opposite transverseljy apertures Se; the key-.ooit are sh sage or pin i turn key-bolt "3 one et the apertures in the circular recess Y turned until the proies ons i inregister with the elefts or grooves 39a o. key-bolt, in which they pressing key 38 inwardly.
.Key-boit 28 is retained in the locked and unlocked positions by means et a weak', orefwhich being held at its upper extremity i8 in a recess t6 in door l? extends downwardly and projects into the uppermost cleft of the aperture 39 at one or' the ends of the key-bolt.
ldhen the bolt is being turned, the exections f in tire y inserted by tremity of spring 47, leaving groove 39,
.through instrumentality of the pinion and rack.
When locked by key 38 or thumb-screw 15, the bolt may be released from either side by action of the key and key-bolt or by Withdrawing screw 15 on the inside of the door, while the corresponding construction of the senese apertures in the escutcheons and the keybolt and the working end of the key prevents opening of the lock by any but its own proper key.
To place the lock in the door7 three concentric recesses 40, 41, and e2 are drilled to permit insertion of the tubular housing 5 and the protruding extremity et bolt 6 with nut 22. Similar holes 25 and 29 are drilled for spindle 24 of knobs 23 and for the key-bolt, While shallow cylindrical recesses drilled at each side ot the barrel-hole in the edge of the door all'ord accommodation i'or the correspondingly-shaped selvage or face-plate e3.
The entire structure is held in place by the escutche s 32, secured by screws and screws 5.45, passing through the face-plate.
'aving thus descrined my invention, what claim ilsi. .si lock comprising tubular housing, e. cylindrical tirar-bolt therein, having reduced rear end, and an arc-snaped rece 30, a rack on said bolt, spindle, a pinion J ereon engaging with the rack to reciprocate the holt, a key-holt extending transversely oi' said draw-bolt and through the arc-shaped 4recess therein, said key-bolt having a corresponding recess therein, escutcheons having o enings therein for the passage oi the spind e, and also having cylindrical projections thereon extending over the ends of the keybolt to hold the same in place; a key for turning the key-bolt to bring the recess therein opposite the recess in the draw-bolt, said projections on the escutcheons having openings therein for the passage of the key and a spring on the reduced end of the draw-bolt having its ends bearing against the said bolt and a part of the housing.
2. A lock comprising a tubular housing, a draw-bolt having a' reciprocating movement therein', means to shoot and retract said bolt, a ke -bolt extending transversely of said drawbo t through a peripheral recess thereof and adapted to be turned out of engagement therewith, and a spring projecting into one of a'plurality of suitable recesses in said bolt.
In testimony whereof` I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER MCCLEARY.
