Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS J. MOBRIEN, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CLOTH ES-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming.part of Letters Patent No. 292,243, dated January 22 1884.
Application filed May 2, 1883. (No model.)
To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. MOBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brook'- lyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and Improved Clothes-Clamp for Beds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a clamping device adapted to be applied to beds, cribs, cradles, and like articles for the purpose of holding the bed clothing or covering in place, the object being to prevent an invalid, child. or restless person from displacing or throwing off the covers, and also serving to hold the covers so firmly in place that they will tend to prevent the occupant from falling out of the bed.
My invention consists in the combination of a frame having one endadapted to fit over the side-board of a bedstead, for instance, and having'its other end elongated to form a stationary jaw, and a movable jaw fulcrumed or pivotally connected near its center to the stationary jaw, said movable jaw being adapted to be moved toward and held firmly against said stationary jaw, or retracted from said stationary jaw, by means of a cam pivotally connected to said movable jaw, all as hereinafter fully set forth. v
In the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by similar letters of reference, Figure 1 is a side View of part of a bedstead with my improved clamping device applied thereto. Fig. 2 isa side view, in elevation, of my improved clamping device.
a designates the frame of my clamping de vice, having a square-cut opening 'ifiione end and two prongs or lips, I) b. The otlfer end of the frame a is elongated to form a stationary jaw, c, to which is fulcrumed or pivotally connected at d a movable jaw, e. As. shown in Figs. 1 and 2, this movable jaw e is'adapted to be moved toward and held firmly against said stationary j aw, or retracted therefrom by means of a cam, f, which is pivotally connected to the inner end of the jaw e, and is capable of having an oscillating or partial rotary movement. Said cam f is provided with a thumbwpiece, g, by which it may be operated. h designates a screw arranged to work in a screw-threaded opening in one of the prongs or lips I). The outer end of the screw h is provided with a thumb-piece, i, and j designates a buffer, of soft material, attached to its inner end, and adapted to prevent the screw h injuring or defacing theparts with which it may be brought in contact.
The attachment and operation are as follows, viz: The frame being set over the side-board of a bedstead, for example, as shown in Fig. 1-, the side-boardentering the opening and being straddled by the prongs or lips, the screw handle or thumb-piece g of the cam f is then tact with the jaw c, and the bed clothing or covers may then beinserted between the jaws and the jaws firmly clamped or locked together by bringing the cam into the position shown in Fig. 2, whereby the bed clothing or covering will be firmly held in place, as stated. What I claim as my invention, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
. As a new. article of manufacture, a clamping device consisting of a frame, a, having prongs or lips I) b, and an adjustable screw, 4., a sta tionary jaw, c, anda movable jaw, e, fulcrumed or pivotally connected to said stationary jaw and provided with the cam f, by means of which said jaw may be moved toward the clothing and hold the same in substantially as set forth.
hand this 18th day of April, A. D. 1883.
FRANCIS J. MOBRIEN.
