To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, l-lnnnr T. ErrnnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in llolding Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to means for holding china or other receptacle or articles While being painted or decorated, and has for its object the provision of means for facilitating the supporting of an article by the hand during the decoration thereof, preferably, by painting the same with a brush held in the operators hand.

Another object of the present invention is the peculiar construction of a clampdevice to be employed by a painter or decorator, which clamp-device or holder comprises a minimum number of parts, is cilicient in operation, and durable and comaratively inexpensive to construct.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the primary jaw, which is, preferably, substantially cylindrical in cross section; the jaw 1 is provided, at its rear end with a bifurcated portion in which the spacing and supporting strip 2 is secured by any suitable fastening means, as rivets or pins 3. The jaw 1 is provided with a flat cut-out ortion, at 4, to which is securedthe holding disk 5 the disk 5 is, preferably, hollow upon its upper portion for receiving the bottom or end of the receptacle, as for instance, cup 6. The holding disk or receptacle 5 constitutes a seat or socket in the primary jaw 1, to be engaged by a portion of the receptacle or article 6, which is to be painted or decorated. Secured to the front flat end of jaw 1 is a plate or foot 7, which is provided with a flat bottom or base 8, whereby the holding or clamp-device can be secured in an upright position upon a table or any other suitable support, and placed thereon, even though the holding or clamp-device is supporting a receptacle or article upon the disk or holder 5.

The auxiliary movable jaw 9 is bifurcated, at its inner end, and within the bifurcated end, is positioned the upper end 10 of the spacing and supporting strip or member 2; the aw 9 being "fixedly secured to the spacing strip through the medium of the pin or rivets 11 extending through the bifurcated portion and the end of the strip 2 positioned therein.

The jaw 9 is provided, at its outer end, with reduced screw-threaded portion 12, which portion 12 is threaded into one end of an elbow 13. A finger or tooth 14 is provided at its upper or inner end with a threaded reduced extension 12, which is threaded into the other end of the elbow 13. The finger 14 is positioned at right-angles to the longitudinal axis of the body 9 of the aw 9. By reason of the peculiar tapering structure of the tooth 14, it is to be noted that while the lower end will extend into and securely clamp the article or receptacle 6 against the disk or horizontal support 5, still it does not take up much room, although the width thereof, at its inner or upper end, contiguous to the extension 12, is suiiicient to afford a very rigid and strong connection with the elbow 13.

It is often desired to hold the article being decorated securely between the jaws, and, therefore, 1 provide a band or loop 15 which is adapted to be quickly positioned over the inner ends of the jaws and passed longitudinally of the same, so that it will be positioned intermediate their ends a sufficient distance to securely retain the article being decorated or which has been decorated between the jaws. It will, therefore, be noted that I have provided a lock for holding the jaws together, which comprises surrounding means, engaging both of the jaws intermediate their ends, and which surrounding or clamping means can be quickly detached when it is desired and the operators hand be employed for holding the jaws together without any auxiliary or mechanical means for accomplishing this result, although in many cases, it is desired to have a lock for accomplishing the function just mentioned. The locking means or band 15 may be formed of rubber or elastic material for accomplishing the desired result.

The foot-plate 7 is of sufiicient length to prevent the device from falling over on its side, when it is laced upon a support, irrespective as to w ether the same is carrying an article or receptacle, as for instance 6.

What I claim is:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a primary jaw provided with a bifurcated end and having at its opposite end a cut-out portion, article-supporting means secured to said cut-out portion, a spacing and supporting strip secured near one end in the bifurcated end, an auxiliary jaw provided with a bifurcated end, the strip positioned in said bifurcated end of the auxiliary jaw, means pivotally securing said auxiliary jaw to said strip, an elbow secured to the other end of said auxiliary jaw, and a finger secured to said elbow.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a primary jaw provided at one end with a slot and at its other end with a cut-out portion, a disk or flat plate secured to the cut-out portion, a vertical foot secured to the outer end of said jaw, and being capable of preventing the jaw from rotating when placed upon a support, a spacing strip positioned at right-angles to said primary jaw and having one end fixedly secured in the slot of the jaw, an auxiliary jaw provided with a slot at its inner end, the strip pivotally secured in the slot of said auxiliary jaw, said auxiliary jaw provided with a body having a reduced threaded extension at its outer end, an elbow threaded upon said ex tension, a tapering finger provided at one end with a reduced threaded extension, said last-mentioned extension threaded into said elbow, the finger normally positioned near one end of said disk, and a detachable band positioned upon the jaws intermediate theirends for holding the same in a closed position.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of jaws, means pivotally connecting said jaws, one jaw provided with a fixed receptacle and the other jaw provided with an inwardly-extending finger adapted to be positioned opposite only the center of said receptacle, whereby an object can be fcilamped between the receptacle and the nger.

4. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of jaws, each jaw provided at their inner ends with bifurcated portions, means positioned within the bifurcated portions of said jaws and spacing the same apart, an inwardly-extending finger carried by one of the jaws and the'other jaw provided with supporting means opposite said finger, and a detachable loop carried by said jaws for normally holding the same in a closed position.

5. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaws, one jaw provided with a transverse support, and the other jaw provided with angularly-disposed engaging means adapted to be positioned contiguous to said fixed support, and detachable loop means carried by said jaws and being capable of securing the same in a clamped or closed position.

6. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of pivotally-mounted jaws spaced apart, one of the jaws provided with a support and the other jaw provided with means adapted to be extended into an article for clamping a portion thereof against said support, and detachable surroundingmeans constituting a band or loop, positioned upon said jaws for holding the same in a clamped or closed position.

7. A holding device for decorating purposes, adapted to be held in the hand and comprising a pair of elongated jaws, means pivotally connecting one end of said jaws, one of the jaws at its other end provided with a hollowed or dished fixed receptacle and the other jaw provided with the angularly-disposed means opposite to said fixed receptacle, said angularly-disposed means adapted to be positioned in an object for clamping the same against said fixed receptacle.
