Description

Nrrnn STATES l PATENT, OFFICE.
PAPER BOX., 4
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,228, dated January 22, 1884.
Application filed August 11, 1883. (No inOdel.)`
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES C. HURD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springfield, Hampden county, State yof Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a speciiication. I
My invention relates to paper boxes; and it consists in a knockdown box made of three pieces of paper joined together, and arranged so that it may be folded flat for transportation and readily opened to form a box when used.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents the blank forming themain body of the box. Fig. 2 is the blank for the ends of the box. Fig. 3 is a top View of the box, showing one of the tongues of the ends projecting through the slit of the bottom 5 and Fig. 4 represents the box folded for packing or transportation.
The box consists of three pieces of paper or other material properly secured together. The"main body of the box consists of a rectangular sheet, A, having folding linesor creases a parallel with the edge, on which lines the blank is folded-to form the sides of the box. Two transverse slits, b, are provided in the bottom, near the ends of the box, for the purpose hereinafter stated. A longitudinal folding line'or crease, c, is also provided through the center of the blank, upon which the body is folded for packing. The end pieces B consist of blanks, substantially in the form shown in Fig. 2, composed of an end portion, d, having extensions or ilaps e, for the purpose of securing the end pieces cl to the sides f ofthe box, and a projection, g, provided with a locking-tongue, 71., having the folding line or crease/t'.
In makingthe box the blanks may be formed in any Well-known way; but it is preferable to cut or stamp them at one operation, forming thecuts and folding lines or creases at the same time. This may be done with any suitable machine or by hand. The sides f of the blank A are folded on the lines a, so as to be at right angles to the bottom or main body of the blank. The flaps or projections e of the end pieces B are secured to the inside ends of the sides f f, preferably by gum or paste,
when the box may be folded on the lines b vl into the form shown in Fig. 4, being ready for the market. When it is desired to use the box, it is only necessary to open the sides, fold the material of the box will vary according to the size and purpose of the box, and it may be printed or4 ornamented in any manner. The end pieces B may be shaped substantially las shown in Fig. 5, so that they can be cut Without Waste of material 5 butv the form shown in Fig. 2 is preferable. v
I do notvdesire to limit myself to any particular forni or construction of box, as the essential features of my invention may be varied to suit the requirements of business.
The advantages of this construction are apparent to those skilled in the art, and it need only be remarked that I am enabled to produce a box that can be compactly folded for storage or transportation, and quickly and easily opened and formed into a strong and durable receptacle.
It is evident that the bottom of the box could be folded inward on the line o, if preferred.
What I claim is f 1. A paper box the bottom and sides of which consist of a slitted rectangular portion, A, and the ends of portions B, having the iiaps e and locking-extension g.
2. A knockdown paper box consisting of the slitted body portion A, having the end pieces B secured to the sides of the body, and provided with locking-extensions, and having the longitudinal folding lines or creases c t' through the middle ofthe body and end pieces, whereby the box may be folded flat for storage, as described.
3. A paper box consisting of a bodyportion, A, having slits b, and the end pieces B,
secured to the sides by iizips e, andhzwing ex- In testimony whereof I have signed my naine Io tensions g, provided with tongues 71, for lockto this specification in the presence of two subing the box, as setforth. seribing witnesses.
4:. A folding box consisting` of the body portion A, having the folding lines or creuses a c, and slits b, and the end pieces B secured to the sides by aps e, und having' extensions y, provided with tongues 71,7 and folding-lines fz', as set forth.
