Flaps. In order to-,complete the {formation of; the bottom, theiflaps l9 and l9rhaveiattachedther to 3 adjacent the bottom panel, bottom closure flaps 28 and 29 which are folded against the bottom after the latter has been squared or set up as illustrated in Fig. 2. a
The carton is provided with the usual form of top closure'flaps. Closure flap 30 is attached to the free end of the front panel along score line 3|. The side closure flaps 32: and 33 are attached to the upper ends of the flaps l9 and 19' along score line 34 and the back closure flap 35 is attached to the upper end of the back anel along the same score line.
The liner II, as has been previously described, may be provided with a liquid-proof thermoplastic coating or may comprise a sheet of thermoplastic material laminated to paper, sheeted cellulose, etc., or it may comprise an inherently liquid-proof and thermoplastic sheet. The liner is secured to the box blank by parallel lines ofadhesive l2 and I3 whichfhowever, do not extend completelyto the ends of the flaps i9 and IQ for a purpose to be later described.
.In setting up the combined liner and blank, the front panel is folded against the back panel by folding the blank 'along the score line l8. The liner H being secured to the front panel IE, (or, stated in other words, the liner is secured to the panels 22 and 23 carried thereby) is also folded so as to bring one half thereof into contacting superimposed face relation with the other half. The longitudinal marginal edges are then sealed together, for example. by the application of heat'and/or pressure and the package in flat form is ready to be shipped to theuser. To set up the container for filling, pressure'is exerted along the longitudinal edges of the foldedblank so as to force the two sections of the bottom into a single plane and to bring the front and rear forming panels into their normal operative position. 13o considering the relative dimensions of the side forming panels and the location of the lines of adhesive l2, it will be noted that the panels 22 "and 23 are substantially onehalf the width of the panels I9 and i9, and the outer longitudinal marginal edges of the lines of adhesive l2 do not extend beyond the outer edges of panels 22 and 23 when the blank is folded along the score line Hi. There will be little or no relative movement between the edges of panels'22 and 23 with respect to the body portions of the panels i9 and I9. Consequently when'an inward pressure is exerted on the longitudinal marginal edges of the panels l9and IS! the panels 22 and 23 will be folded into a plane normal to the plane of the front panel, with the subsequent folding of the panels l9 and I9 into a'plane normal to the plane of the rear panel. Further, since the bag formed from the liner is secured to the panels [6 and I! by the lines of adhesive I2 and I3. the bag will be automatically opened up for filling. Tabs 24 and 25 are then inserted into the slots 26 and 21. Bottom flaps are folded against the bottom of the carton and are secured thereto by adhesive in order to complete the carton.
' After the bag 39 has been filled, opposite wall portions are then brought together and sealed in any suitable manner. This sealed end 40 is then folded against the contents and the tabs 4| and 42 formed by this folding operation are also folded against the contents. The flaps of the carton are then closed in the usual manner.
Referring now to Figs.'3 and 4 there is shown a liner and carton blank combination quite similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, excepting that the carton blank is so scored that a six-sided container may be formed. The carton blank is divided by the horizontally positioned score lines 46 and 41 into front and rear panels 43 and 44 and a bottom panel 45. The side-forming panels 48 and 49, and 50 and 5|. are attached respectively to the front and rear panels 43 and 44 along the longitudinally disposed score lines 52 and 53. Panels 50 and 5| have attached thereto adjacent the bottom panel 45 the bottom closure flaps 54 and '55 and are provided at the other end with the side closure flaps 56 and 51. Front and rear top closure flaps 58 and 59 are carried respectively by the front and rear panels 43 and 44. The liner is secured to the front and rear wall-forming panels by bands of adhesive BI and 50 and 5|. These bands of adhesive are positioned adjacent the score lines 52 and 53.
- As in the modification disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2, the blank is folded along the medial score line 82 provided in the bottom. Since the liner' 63 is attached to both the front and rear wall-form ing panels, it will be automatically folded at the same time that the carton blank is folded along the medial score line 52, and 'whenso folded the upper and lower halves of the liner will be in substantial registration. The said wall-forming flaps 50 and 5| are each provided with a tentrally located, longitudinallypositioned score line 64 which divides the said'panels into secondary panels 60.
After the blank has been folded along the score line 62 so that the lower half of the blank is superimposed on the upper half thereof, the liner is formed into acontainer by securing the longitudinal edges together. If the liner is' formed from thermoplastic material or comprises sheet material provided with a thermoplastic coating, the edges may be secured together merely by the application of heat and/or pressure. Should the sheet material be provided with a non-thermo-' plastic coating or should an uncoatedsheet ma-' terial be used, adhesive may be used to form the longitudinally positioned seams of the inner container. The formation of the inner container is readily accomplished since the liner is suin ciently wide to project a substantial distance beyond the outer edges of the panels 48 and 49. After the inner-container has been formed the panels 60 are folded along the score lines 64 so as to bring them'into contact with the panels 49 and 49. The panels 48, 49 and 60 are there-' upon secured together in any suitable manner as by the use of adhesive. When the panels 60 are folded over into sealing position the side seams of the inner container will be interposed between said panels and the panels 48 and 49. The combined carton and container in its flat folded form is then'ready for shipment to the user.
As will be noted from an inspection of both Figs. 1 and 3, the liners are secured to the respective blanks by lines of adhesive which 'ter minate short of the flaps by which'they are carried. This feature of the present invention serves to allow the corners of the filled bag to move freely with respect to the comers of the carton. Should the carton be dropped or fall on one of the corners, the bag, being free to move, will not be torn nor will the bag seams be rup-.:
vided that they are located adjacent to the score lines separating the front and rear wall-forming panels from the side wall-forming panels so that when pressure is exerted on the side-walls there will be not only a arallel separation of the front and rear wall-forming panels, but the side wallforming panels will be squared up into a plane normal to the bottom. Such movement of the well-forming portions of the container will automatically open the inner container into filling position.
While the features of the present invention have been described with respect to two forms of packages, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that many types of material may be used in the manufacture of both the bag and carton and that many modifications may be made in constructional details thereof without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention except as hereinafter defined in the appended claims which are to be broadly construed.
I claim:
1. A carton of the class described having secured thereto an inner flexible container and adapted to be shipped fiat comprising, front and rear walls, a bottom connecting said front and rear walls, side walls attached to said rear wall, other side walls attached to said front wall and provided with slits, tabs carried by said firstmentioned side walls for insertion into said slits after the carton has been squared up into filling position, said bottom being medially foldable to bring the front and rear walls into superimposed relation for shipment, an inner flexible container positioned between said front and rear walls and secured to the carton adjacent the lines of separation between the front and rear walls, and side walls, whereby upon parallel separation of said front and rear walls, the bottom will be moved into a plane substantially at right angles to the front and rear panels, the inner container will be opened into filling position, and the side walls will be positioned in plane substantially at right angles to the front and rear walls for insertion of said tabs into said slits.

A container in flat folded form capable of being erected into a rigidly squared condition for filling which comprises, a carton including front and rear wall-forming panels, a bottom-forming panel connecting said front and rear wall-forming panels, said bottom-forming panel being folded along a medial fold line on which said carton is folded to bring the front and rear wallforming panels into superimposed relation, side walls attached to said rear wall, other side walls attached to said front wall and provided with slits, tabs carried by said first-mentioned side walls for insertion into said slits after the carton has been squared up into filling position to hold said carton in rigidly squared condition; an openmouth bag within said carton, said bag comprising an envelope folded upon itself along a line substantially coinciding with the medial fold of said bottom panel and having side seams, opposed walls of said bag being secured respectively to said front and rear walls of said carton whereby when said carton is erected from its fiat folded form said bag will simultaneously open into filling position with the bottom thereof substantially conforming to the bottom of said carton.

A paper receptacle comprising an inner container formed of a single sheet of pliable material substantially impervious to air, moisture and oils or grease and folded to form two similar side portions and sealed at the marginal edges thereof, and an outer carton composed of front and rear sections attached to the side portions of said sheet to form a unit with the inner con-' tainer, said front and rear carton sections forming front and rear walls and having hinged side wall sections foldable over each other in overlapping relation, the hinged side wall sections of one of the carton sections extending the full width of the carton and the side walls sections of the other carton section terminating at the central transverse plane of the carton, and foldable closure members carried by the carton sections and arranged to cover the ends of the inner container.

A paper receptacle comprising an inner container formed of a single sheet of pliable material substantially impervious to air, moisture and oils or grease and folded to form two similar side portions and sealed at the marginal edges thereof, and an outer carton composed of front and rear sections attached to the side portions of said sheet to form a unit with the inner container, said front and rear carton sections forming front and rear walls, a bottom forming panel integral with and connecting said front and rear walls and being medially foldable to bring said front and rear walls into superimposed relation, said front and rear walls having hinged side wall sections foldable over each other in overlapping relation, the hinged side wall sections of one of the carton sections extending the full width of the carton and the side wall sections of the other carton section terminating at the central transverse plane of the carton, and foldable closure members carried by the carton sections and arranged to cover the ends of the inner container.
