Patented Feb. 72, 1944 CARTON AND BLANK Ffllt FGIRMING THE SAME ii Claima This invention relates to the packaging of materials and, more particularly, to a carton or container having secured thereto a bag of improved construction, said carton or container being so constructed that it may be shipped flat to the purchaser and set up or squared into filling position by pressure exerted on opposed panels thereof.
One object of this invention is to provide a carton or container formed from an integral blank of flexible fibrous material having secured thereto along the side wall-forming panels a liner made preferably of thermoplastic liquidproof material or provided with a coating of such material. The bottom-forming panel is provided with a medial fold line so that the front and rear panels may be brought into superimposed re1ation and the liner may be similarly folded. The side wal1-forming panels are sealed in a fiat position or they may be provided with securing means which can readily be fastened by the user when the carton or container isset up.
Another object of this invention is to seal the longitudinally disposed edges of the superimposed sections of the liner at the time the carton blank is folded upon itself and before the side wall-forming panels have been secured together. The carton and liner construction of the present invention obviates both a separate bag-forming operation and the use of complicated and expen sive equipment in setting up the carton or container and the bag into filling position.
Still another object of this invention is to so secure the liner to the carton blank that it will open into filling position automatically when the carton is set up. At the same time the corners of the bag formed from the liner are free to move with respect to the corners of the carton so that should the package be dropped on one of its corners the bag, being free to move, will not be torn.
These and other objects of this invention will become more apparent from a study of the following description and by reference to the accompanying drawing in which:

Referring now to the drawing in which like numerals indicate like parts, and, more particularly to the modification disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2, there is shown a box blank ill in which is secured, by parallel lines of adhesive 12 and I3, a liner or inner container-forming member II. The blank, as is customary in the art, may be formed from any suitable flexible fibrous material such as chip board, krait board, jute or the like. The type of material from which the liner It is formed depends primarily upon the material to be packaged. If liquid or semi-liquid materials are to be packaged, any suitable form of liquid-proof material will be employed as, for example, paper coated with commercial liquidproofing material, rubber hydrochloride, shee-ted resins, proteins, etc.. Grease-proofed and wax or other coated materials as well as laminated sheet materials can be used. The use of any thermoplastic coating or material in addition to those materials above enumerated is also contemplated.
Although reference will hereinafter be made in the description to front and rear walls or panels, side walls or side panels. etc., it will be obvious that these terms are merely chosen for descriptive purposes and not by way of limitation, as the relative positions of the various walls and their sizes may be modified without departing from the scope of the invention. The blank ill is, therefore, divided by the horizontally disposed score lines it and it into panels i6 and H which form the front and rear walls of the carton, and a bottom panel I 8 which forms the bottom thereof. The bottom panel is also provided with a medial score line i8 along which the blank is folded, as will hereinafter be more particularly described.
Flaps iii and I9 are attached to the longitudinal marginal edges of the rear panel ll along score lines 2'3 and 2E and complementary, flaps 22 and 23 are attached to the longitudinal marginal edges of the front panel along extensions of these score lines. When the carton is set up the side walls thereof are formed by the flaps i9,-
28 and 29 which are folded against the bottom after'the latter has been squared or set up as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The carton is provided with the usual form of top closure flaps. Closure flap 30 is attached to the free end of the front panel along score line 3!. The side closure flaps 32 and 33 are attached to the upper ends of the flaps I9 and 19 along score line 34 and the back closure flap 35 is attached to the upper end of the back panel along the same score line. i
The liner H, as has been previously described, may be provided with a liquid-proof thermoplastic coating or may comprise a sheet of thermoplastic material laminated to paper, sheeted cellulose, etc., or it may comprise an inherently liquid-proof and thermoplastic sheet. The liner is secured to the box blank by parallel lines of adhesive 82 and I 3 which, however, do not extend completely to the ends of the flaps i9 and it for a purpose to be later described.
In setting up the combined liner and blank, the front panel is folded against the 'back panel by folding the blank along the score line it. The liner it being secured to the front panel 55 (or, stated in other words, the liner is secured to the panels 22 and 23 carried thereby), is also folded so as to bring one half thereof into contacting superimposed face relation with the other half. The longitudinal marginal edges are then sealed together, for example, by the application of heat and/or pressure andthe package in flat form. is readyto be shipped to the user. j
To set up the container for filling, pressure is exerted along the longitudinal'edges of the folded blank so as to force the two sections of the bottom into a single plane and to bring the front and rear forming panels into their normal operative position. In considering the relative dimensions of the side-forming panels and the location of the lines of adhesive i 2, it will be noted that the panels 22 and 23 are substantially one-half the width of the panels l9 and i9, and the outer longitudinal marginal edges of the lines of adhesive l2 do not extend beyond the outer edges of panels 22 and 23 when the blank is folded along the score line l8. There will be little or no relative movement between the edges of panels 22 and 23 with respect to the body portions of the panels I!) and 59'. Consequently when an inward pressure is exerted on the longitudinal marginal edges of the panels l9 and ill, the panels 22 and 23 will will be folded into a plane normal to theplane of the front panel, with the subsequent folding of the panels l9 and I9 into a plane normal to the plane of the rear panel. Further,
since the bag formed from the liner is secured to the panels l6 and H, by the lines of adhesive I2 and i3, the bag will be automatically opened up for filling. Tabs 24 and 25 are then inserted into the slots 26 and 21. Bottom flaps are folded against the bottom of the cartonand are secured thereto by adhesive in order to complete the carton.
After the bag-39 has been filled, opposite wall portions are then brought together and sealed in any suitable manner. This sealed end 40 is then folded against the contents and the tabs ll. and 42 formed by this folding operation are also folded against the contents. The flaps of the carton are then closed in the usual manner.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4 there is shown a liner and carton blank combination quite similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, excepting that the 70 the bands of adhesive in both carton blank is so scored that a six-sided container may be formed. The carton blank is divided by the horizontally positioned score lines at and 41 into front and rear panels 43 and i4 5 and a bottom panel 45. The side forming panels it and 69, and 50 and 5!, are attached respectively to the front and rear panels 43 and M along the longitudinally disposed score lines 52 and 53. Panels 5t and 5! have attached thereto adjacent the bottom panel 35, the bottom closure flaps 54 and 55 and are provided at the other end with the side closure flaps 56 and il. Front and rear top closure flaps 53 and 59 are carried respectively by the front and rear panels 43? and 44. The liner is secured to the front and rear wall-forming panels by bands of adhesive El and 5th and 58'. These bands. of adhesive are positioned adjacent the score lines 52 and 53.
As in the modification disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2,
the blank is folded along the medial score line 62 provided in the bottom. Since the liner 63 is attached to both the front and rear wall-forming panels, it will automatically be folded at the same time that the carton blank is folded along the 2s medial score line 62, and when so folded the upper and lower halves of the liner will be in substantial registration. The said wall-forming flaps 50 and 5! are each provided with a centrally located, longitudinally positioned score line 64 which divides the said panels into secondary panels Eli.
After the blank has been folded along the score line 52 so that the lower half of theblank is superimposed on the upper half thereof, the liner is formed into a container by securing the longitudinal edges together. The panels 48, 49 and are thereupon secured together in any suitable manner as by the use of adhesive. When the panels Bil are folded over into sealing position the side seams 5 0f the inner container will be interposed between said panels and the panels 48 and 49. The combined carton and container in its fiat folded form is then ready for shipment to the user.
As will be noted from an inspection of both 80 Figs. 1 and 3, the liners are secured to the respective blanks by lines of adhesive which terminate short of the flaps by which they are carried. This feature of the present invention serves to allow the corners of the filled bag to move 65 freely with respect to the corners of the carton.
Should the carton be dropped or fall on one of the corners, the bag, being free to move, will not be torn nor will the bag seams be ruptured.
It will 'be further appreciated that although embodiments of the invention are carried by the front and rear wall-forming panels, they may, nevertheless, also be carried by the side wall-forming panels provided that they are located adjacent to the score lines separating the front and rear wall-forming panels from the side wall-forming panels so that when pressure is exerted on the side-walls there will be not only a parallel separation of the front and rear wall-forming panels, but the side wall-forming panels will be squared up into a plane normal to the bottom. Such movement of the wall-forming portions of the container will automatically open the inner container into filling position.
While the features of the present invention have been described with respect to two forms of packages, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that many types of material may be used in the manufacture of both the bag and carton and that many modifications may be made in constructional details thereof without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention except as hereinafter defined in the appended claims which are to be broadly construed. I
I claim:
1. A container in fiat folded form capable of being erected into a rigidly squared condition for filling which comprises a carton formed of fibrous, form-sustaining material having a pair of main panels in substantial registry, a pair of side panels folded along medial fold lines and a bottom panel folded along medial fold lines and connecting said main panels, said carton being erectable by unfolding said medially folded side being erected into a rigidly squared condition for filling, which comprises a pair of main panels in substantial registry; a pair of side panels folded along medial fold lines, and a bottom panel folded along medial fold lines and connecting said main panels; and bottom flaps folded along medial fold lines and extending from the lower ends of said side panels and defined by fold lines extending transversely of said medial fold lines. said flaps being foldable along said transverse lines when the container is erected to bring said flaps into facewise contact with said bottom panel and securable in such position to form stiffening ridges along said transverse fold-lines, thereby preventing collapse of the erected container along said medial fold lines. i a q 2. A container in flat folded form capable of being erected into -a rigidly squared condition for filling, which comprises a carton, formed of fibrous, form-sustaining material having a pair of main panels in substantial registry, a pair of side panels folded along medial fold lines and a bottom panel folded along medial fold lines and connecting said main panels, said carton being erectable by unfolding'said medially folded side and bottom panels; an inner flexible container secured to said carton on two opposed panels whereby when said carton is erected from its fiat folded form the inner container will simultaneously open into filling position; and bottom fiaps folded along medial fold lines and extending from the lower end of said side panels and defined by fold lines extending transversely of and bottom panels; an open-mouth bag within said carton, said bag being formed of flexible sheet material folded upon itself along a line substantially coinciding with the medial fold of said bottom panel and having side seams, opposed walls of said bag being secured to opposed panels of said carton whereby when said carton is erected from its fiat folded form said bag will simultaneously open into filling position with the bottom thereof substantially conforming to the bottom of said carton; and bottom flaps folded along medial fold lines and extending from the lower ends of said side panels and defined by fold lines extending transversely of said medial folds, said fiaps being foldable along said transverse lines when the carton is erected to bring said fiaps into facewise contact with said bottom panel and securable in said position to form stiffening ridges along said transverse fold lines, thereby preventing collapse of the erected package along said medial fold lines.

A container in fiat folded form capable of being erected into a rigidly squared condition for filling which comprises a carton formed of fibrous, form-sustaining material having a pair of main panels in substantial registry, a pair of side panels folded along medial fold lines and a bottom panel folded along medial fold lines and connecting said main. panels, said carton being erectable by unfolding said medially folded side and bottom panels; an open-mouth bag within said carton, said bag being formed of flexible sheet material presenting at least one fusible surface, said fiexible sheet material being folded upon itself along a line substantially coinciding with the medial fold of said bottom panel and having side seams formed by fusion of said fusible surface in facewise contact with itself, opposed walls of said bag being secured to opposed panels of said carton whereby when said carton is erected from its fiat folded form said bag will simultaneously open into filling position with the bottom thereof substantially conforming to the bottom of said carton; and bottom flaps folded along medial fold lines and extending from the lower end of said side panels and defined by'fold lines extending transversely of said medial folds, said fiaps being foldable along said transverse lines when the carton is erected to bring said flaps into facewise contact with said bottom panel and securable in such position to form stiffening ridges along said transverse fold lines, thereby preventing collapse of the erected package along
