To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY SOHNARR, a

1 citizen of the United States, residing at Nora Springs, in the county of Floyd and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Oombined Heel-Plate and Counter-Support, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to combined heelplates and counter-supports; and itconsists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a perspective view of the device complete. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the parts separated from each other; and lig. 3 is a view showing the device secured in position upon a boot.

The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.

A in the drawings designates the heel-plate, which consists of a pair of leaves, B B, connected by a short narrow stem, 0, from which a shank, D, projects upwardly, as shown. The said leaves may be circular, or of any suitable shape, and the shank, which is in tegral therewith, is flat, and provided with one or more slots, E.

F designates the counter-support, which consists of a suitably-shaped plate, G, having a downward]y-projecting stem, H, the sides of which have flanges I I fitting over the shank of the heel-plate upon which the counter-support slides, andis vertically adjustable. The plate G has a semicircular slot, J, so that before it is adjusted its upper portion may be pressed inwardly, so as to bear or press tightly against the counter of the shoe or boot upon which the device is adjusted, thereby performing its office of stiffening the counter more effectively than would otherwise be the case. The stem H has one or more perforations, K K, which will register with the slot or slots E in the shank of the heel-plate, and through which the fastening screw or screws are passed.

The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoingdescription, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The heel-plate may be readily adjusted to the size of the heels of different-sized boots and shoes by simply spreading or bringing together the leaves B B, which may readily be done, owing to the comparative thinness of the connecting shank or stem (J. The counter-support may also be raised or lowered to any desired point. The device is attached by means of nails passing through the perforations in the leaves 13 and one or more screws passing through the perforations K and slots E into the side of the heel. Should the heel be al ready worn or run down before the application of my improved device, a piece ofleather may be readily shaped and placed between the leaves B B and the worn side of the heel, which may thus be raised even with the other side. The patch or loose piece will be held in position by the nails which secure the leaves B B to the heel, and which pass through the said loose piece.

The construction of this device is simple and inexpensive. It presents a neat appearance, and asingle size will answer for boots and shoes of many different sizes, thereby making it unnecessary for dealers to keep a large stock of assorted sizes.

I claim as myinvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The l1erein-described improved combined adjustable heel-plate and counterstifiener, the same consisting of a heel-plate composed of a pair of plates or leaves connected by a narrow stem havingan upwardlyprojecting vertically slotted shank, in combination with a counterstilfener consisting of a plate having a semicircular slot and provided with a downwardlyprojecting flanged stem vertically adjustable upon the shank of the heel-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
