Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JANE MARIA 'WILK1`NSON, OF URBANA, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE SANDAL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JANE MARIA WILKIN- SON, of Urbana, in the county of Ohampaign and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Sandal; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, made part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View. View of the bottom of the sandal. vertical longitudinal section.
The sandal is intended to be Worn over an ordinary shoe. The bottom of the sandal, D, is of leather, orrit may be of wood or wood covered with leather. To give pliancy to this heavy sole a slit, E, is cut directly across the sole under the ball of the foot, held together by the pliable leather on which the foot rests, forming the top ot' the sandal-sole.
The toe of the shoe is received by a leather socket, into which the foot is slipped. A strap and buckle, Gr, passing over the instep, fasten the middle and rear of the sandal. The heel A has a raised flange, A', into which the heel of the shoe lits, and in which it is firmly held by the aid of the strap G and catch B. This catch B is a plate rising from the forward side of the heel, havingits upper edge bent toward the heel, and its edge serrated to hold against the top of the front part of the heel of the shoe.
The heel A does not unite with the part D as a part of an entire sole, but is made separately, and held in conjunction with the sole D by means ofthe slide C, working into a Fig.2isa Fig. 3 is .socket in the shank of D, and held in place by the set-screw F.
The slide C is, at its rear end, built firmly into the structure of the heel A, and is made of brass or other suitable metal. It has a slot running longitudinally through its center, through which passes the set-screw C, which retains itin any position that may be required to adapt the sandal to the size ofthe foot. As this slot does not extend the entire length of the slide in no event, can the heel entirely detach itself'. To receive this slide a corre sponding socket is constructed of suitable metal in the shank.
Having thus fully explained vthe const-ructon of my improved adjustable sandal, what I claim as myinvention, and seek to secure by Letters Patent, is. f
1. The plate B, in combination with the heel A of the sandal, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. An adjusting device by which a sandal may be adapted to ditt'erent sizes ot' shoes7 substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The sole D, with the opening E, in combination with the adjustable heel A and plate B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony Whereot'I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
her l JANE MARIA WILKINSON.
