Description
NO zQloLL Patented Jan. 8, 1884.
UNITED STATES4 PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS E. KNowLEs, OE TOLEDO, AssIeNOE OE ONETHIED YTo ROBERT MOEEETT, OE oLEvELAND, OHIO.
lNKSTAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,604, dated January 8, 1884.v
` Application filed October 3, 1883.
(No model.)
To n/ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, THoMAs B. KNowLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio. have invented a new and useful Inkstand, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to inkstands and penracks combined; audit has for its object to provide a device which shall possesssuperior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
To this end it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and `particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure lis a perspective view, showing myimproved inkstandopen. Fig. 2 is atransverse vertical sec-V tional View taken through the inlcwell of the device, and Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, A designates a suitable rectangular box, which forms the casing of my improved inkstand, and which contains the inkwell B, on one side of which is formed a laterallyextending box, C, completely lling the case A and forminga receptable for a sponge or penwiper, D, which is held in place by means of inwardly-projecting lugs E E upon the ends of the said box C. The top F of the ink-well is provided with ,an opening, G, surrounded on its upper side by a circumferential collar, H, to receive a tightly-iitting cover, I. The latter is provided with an elliptical or oblong concave recess, J, inclined or deepened toward its front end, where it isprovided with a circular Opening, K. Said recess is covered by a convex plate or cover, L, having at its front end an opening, M, vfor the admission` of the pen. lSl` is a ball, fitted in the recess J, where it serves to cover the opening K, over which `it drops by its own gravity, the loss or displacement of the said ball being prevented by ,the covering-plate L. The operation of this part of the invention will be readily understood. `The ball N keeps the ink-wel1 `autoina-tical] y closed, thus preventing evaporation of the ink and excluding dust. When the pen is inserted, it displaces the ball and enters the well, where it is supplied with ink. As it is withdrawn the ball N will press lightly against it, thus removing any superiiuity of ink which it may have received, and consequently preventing the dropping of ink and making of blots. The coverP of the case or box A is provided on its inner or under side with racks O O, adapted to receive and hold one or more pelrholders. The sides Q, Q and top of the box A are provided with recesses R It, which will receive the pen-holders when the said cover is closed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. It is simple, inexpensive, convenient, and eminently useful for the purposes stated.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. An ink-Well casing having the inwardf turned lugs E, to retain in position a sponge or pen-wiper, as described.
2. The combination, with an ink-well having an opening surrounded by a circumferential collar, of a cover having an inclined concave recess provided with an opening at its lower end, a convex plate or cover secured above the said recess and having an opening at its front end, and a ball arranged in the said recess, and adapted to automatically close the opening in the same, substantially as set forth.
3. Asanimprovementininkstands, thecombination of a box creasing, the top of which is provided with recesses R, to receive the penhandlcs,`with a hinged cover provided upon its under side with pen-racks 0,' substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of Atwo witnesses.
i THOMAS B. KNOWLES.
