Description

PATENT OFFICE.
STUART D. CLARK, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT lN INKSTANDS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,743, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Re it known that I, STUART D. CLARK, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State ot Minnesota, have invented certain useful Improvements in Ink-Wells, of which the following is a specication:
My improvement relates to the closing of inkwells used in school-desks by a lid and lever so constructed and arranged as to operate upon the wedge principle, making the well air-tight and preventing' evaporation.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation, reference being' had to the accompanying' drawing and letters of reference marked thereon which make a part of this speciiication.
Figure 1 is a view of the well in perspective. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the well A with the metallic casing surrounding it, and the leversocket F beside the well and inclined thereto. Fig. 3 is a top view of the rim B of the well A, having a smooth surtlce on its top. Fig. et is a side view of lever D, which is to be inserted in socket F. Fig. 5 is a top view of the detached lid E, with its under side smoothly polished.
D is a lever, bent as shown at I, the long arm 1 of which iits into socket F and is secured below by pin Cr, and having upon its shorter arm the knuckle H, which iits into the lid-socket J. When the lid E is placed on the well and lever D inserted into the socket F and secured by the pin G, the knuckle H at the same time fitting into socket J andsecurin g the lid, the effect produced by the socket F holdingl the long arm of D a little out of perpendicular to the surface line c b will be that, when the short arm of D is brought to the front, a center pressure will. be given to the lid by means of the knuckle H, and the smooth face of the lid be thereby tightly wedged to the smooth surface B, rendering the wel] air-tight, while, by throwing the lever one side, the wedge is loosened and the well opened without detaching the lid.
I claim as my invention* The well A, supplied with transverse socket F and smooth rim-surface B, in combination with the curved lever D, lid E, and pin G, so that by turning the lever a center pressure will be given to the lid by the knuckle H and the well be closed tightly, on the principle of the wedge, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
' STUART D. CLARK.
