PATENT OFFICE.
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN FASTENING THE COVERS OF INK-WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,753, dated October 18, 1864.
T0 all whom it ntf/,y concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. SHERwooD, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Means of Fastening on the Covers of Ink-Wells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and. exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
Figure I is a plan ot` an inkwell provided with my improvement, the cover being removed; Fig. 2, a central vertical section of the same in a plane indicated by the line x, Fig. l 5 Fig. 3, a central vertical section thereof in aplane indicated by the line y y, Fig. 1; Fig. 4, an under side view of the cover arranged for the improved fastening; Fig. a side view of the same in thedirection indicated by the arrow w, Fig. 4; Fig. 6, aside view thereof, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow z, Fig. 4.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all ofthe figures.
The well A, in which the glass ink-cup B rests, is provided at the top with a flange, a, projecting both outward and upward, sub stantially as shown in the drawings. The
' vertically-projecting part is cut away or omitted in two opposite parts of the periphery, as seen in Fig. 1, and in these open spaces the countersunk screw-holes c c, whereby the well is attached to the desk or table, are situated. In the inner periphery of the remaining portions of this. vertical part or rim ofthe flange is turned a groove or grooves, b b, of riglit angled or equivalent form. Between these rims and a raised central lip around the glass i nk-cup, respectively on opposite sides, are inclined planes d d, ascending very slightly from left to right. The cover C has a raised portion on its upper side, surrounding a central cavity, i, which shuts over the ink-cup, but it is nearly cnt away on two sides, making it oblong, as indicated in Fig. 4. The two opposite extended portions have their outer edges concentric with the cover itself, and terminate in projections f f, which will loosely fit into the grooves b I) of the wellflange. These ends are only wide enough to be admitted into the opposite open spaces in the vertical rim of the well-harige, whereby the cover is brought close down upon the well far enough to allow the said projections ffto enter the said grooves b b.
Between the projections f f and the central cavity, li, are inclined planes g g, rising from left to right when the cover is inverted, but of course in the opposite direction when the cover is in position upon the well. These inclined planes correspond with the others, l d, on the ink-well, so that by turning the cover round tothe right by a key, inserted in the pen-aperture It, (which is made oblong, or of other suitable shape for the purpose,) the opposite inclined planes meet and gradually press the cover upward, binding the' projections f f against the upper edges of the grooves b b securely.
This method of fastening aifords the advantages of cheap construction, unusual strength, and convenience, and obviates the liability of the covers becoming pressed down on the glass inlr-cup B, which might be broken thereby.
What I claim as my invention, and .desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Fastening on the covers of ink-wells by means ofinclined planes g g on the under surface thereof, Aacting upon corresponding inclined planes on the upper surface ot the well itself, in combination with the plane projections f f on the cover, and the corresponding grooves, b b, in the rim of the well, receiving the saine, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
HENRY M. SHERVOOD.
