LOCK-COVER FOR TANKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1915.
Application filed February 18, 1916. Serial No. 79,136.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GnoRen G. DYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Covers for Tanks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in flush tanks and it has for its object the provision of a simple and efficient locking device whereby the cover of the tank may be securely attached and conven-- iently removed at any time when it may be necessary to secure access to the interor of the tank.
To this end and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel construction and in the peculiar arrangement, combination and adaptation of parts all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a flush tank with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a like view of the top of the tank showing the cover attached, taken from the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, parts being broken away. Fig. 4 is a detail in section of the locking joint. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing a portion of the upper edge of the tank with its locking lug. Fig. 6 is a cross section taken through the cover showing the locking shoulders.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numeral, 1 designates a flush tank which may be of any of the well known and commonly used forms of construction, made preferably of earthenware, enameled iron, wood or sheet metal.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for 2 is a cover for the tank, the said cover bemg preferably constructed of earthenware, enameled iron, wood or sheet metal with its downwardly extended flanges 3 at its end being thicker than the body of the cover and each provided with a recess 4, the said recess openlng upon the inner face of the cover and is adapted to receive a. lug 5 provided upon the outer face of the tank at the upper edge thereof.
From the foregoing description, the operation of the locking mechanism will be at once clearly understood. l/Vhen' it is desired to secure the cover to the tank, the openings l, provided in the downwardly extending flanged portion of the cover, are brought into alinement with the lugs 5 upon the upper edge of the tank when the cover may he slid into place and held against displacement by the bottom of the opening which provides, when in its normal position, engagement of the cover lug with the lug 5 upon the upper edge of the tank and also provides against accidental horizontal displacement by the lug 5 upon the tank which engages the projection 7 at the end of the recess l in the cover. When it is desired for any reason to remove the cover, a slight raising of the cover will serve to bring the exit groove 6 in alinement with the lug 5, thus permitting the cover to be withdrawn.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In a locking device for tank covers, the combination with a tank provided at its upper edges with lugs 5, of a sliding cover provided with a dove-tailed slot adapted to engage said lug 5, and having an extension 7 adapted to normally engage a lug 6 and hold the cover against accidental lateral displacement, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE G. DYER.
