DETACI-IABLE STOVE-SHELF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23, 1913.
Application filed February 23, 1912. Serial No. 679,343.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MINARD A. PossoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Stove-Shelves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in detachable stove shelves, and means for leveling the shelf with the top of the stove, irrespective of the variations which occur in the thickness of the abutting walls of the shelf and the stove top.
It is well known to those skilled in the art of making castings, such as stove tops and stove shelves, that there is a slight variation in the thickness of the walls of the depending flanges, and that by reason of this variation the ordinary interlocking and detachable shelf is frequently not accurately level with the top of the stove, where the interlocking hooks or projections of the shelf and the stove top are made of cast material, which makes them practically immovable without breakage. Heretofore these interlocking and abutting portions of the stove top and shelf have been cast integral with the shelf and the stove top, and considerable labor and time have been required to fit the shelf and stove top accurately level with each other when they are in interlocked posi tions. I overcome these objections by pro viding the interlocking hook of malleable material, or of material capable of being bent, whereby by slightly bending the hook or hooks, the shelf is quickly and accurately fitted. to the stove top and with a great deal less labor than heretofore required to make such fitting.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a part of a stove top with a shelf applied thereto and to which my present improvement is applied. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the interlocking portions of the stove top and stove shelf, the parts being shown in separated relation. F 8 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a de tached edge view showing a portion of the shelf with my improved hook applied thereto, the bending of the hook to effect a fitting of the shelf to the stove top being shown in dotted lines.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 is the stove top and 2 the stove shelf. As here shown, the stove top 1 is provided with a recess 3, the bottom wall of the recess having a hook receiving opening 4t. The stove top has a vertical edge or wall 5 located outside of the recess 3. As shown the shelf 2 is provided with a projection 6, of a size to fit within the recess 3, and a hook 7 is cast or otherwise secured in this projection 6. This hook is formed of wrought or bendable material, and when cast in the projection 6 is preferably provided with a head 8. The lateral end 9 of the hook 7 is capable of being bent either up or down, as shown in Fig. t, for the purpose of fitting the stove shelf to the stove top 1. As will be readily understood, by bending the end 9 of this hook either up or down, the shelf can be fitted to the stove top perfectly level with the top and irrespective of the variations which practically always occur in the molding or casting. The shelf 2 is provided with a depending wall 10 on its edge, which engages the wall 5 of the top when the parts are in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a cast iron stove top of a separable cast iron stove shelf, the top and shelf having abutting edges, the said top having truncated cone-shaped rccesses, each of said recesses terminating in a circular passage, the said shelf having truncated cone-shaped lugs fitting in the said recesses and the said lugs carrying hooks passing through the said passages, the said hooks bendable for the purpose of alining the said abutting edges of the top and shelf.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
