Be it known that I, PniLir C. Mannen, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Cedar Rapids, in the county ot Linn and State o' Iowa, have invented new and useful Car-Door, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in car doors.
The objecty ot the present invention is to improve the construction vof the car door shown and described in an application filed by me Nov. 22, 19H, Serial 561,740, and to equip the same with a Ventilating door, adapted to be. easily and quickly mounted in the door opening of a t'reight car in position to cooperate with'the lower or main door, when it: is desired to change the car door from a storm proof grain tight closure to a .Ventilating door.'
A. further object. of the invention is to provide means adapted when the lower or inain doors are folded against the exteriml Ot the car to protect the same from the drip from the top ot the car and at the same time retain the doors in their tolded position.

In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of e the invention, the car door comprises in its vcmistructon an upper door '1, a lower or main door', which is composed of four vertical door sections 2, 3, t and 5, and a Ventilating door 6,'the lower or main door and the upper door being adapted to be used together, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the draw' ings and in substantially the manner shown i and described in the aforesaid application, when it is desired to torni a grain tight storm proof closure, and the Ventilating door being designed for use' in connection with the lower or main door to provide for Ventilation, as illustrated in Figs. l and 3 of the accompanying drawings. The bottom of the groove is provided with openings 37, comn'ninicating with passages 38 extendingYA through the bottom of the car and adapted to .permit acids or other liquids spilled in the car adjacent vto the car door to drain through the openings .in the bottom of the groove or gutter. It is the practice ou some roads in shipping' acid and other liquid liable to injure the other contents of the rar to place such liquids close to the door and to nail. strips on the bottom or lloor of the car toconfine any leakage within a limited area. As the bottom of the Agroove is located below the plane of the surface o't the floor, any such leakage will he drained olf by (he `groove or gutter and the openings thereof. The inner and outer portions ot' the metallic sill or sill plate are inclined and are preicrably supported by filler strips Il() of wood or other suitable material, arranged beneath the sill plate, as clearly illustrated in F ig. 4 of the drawings. The outer inclined portion is adapted tol shed water and prevent the saine from percolating into the car at the bottom of the door opening.
rl'he groove or gutter besides constituting a drain is also adapted to receive depending studs or projections 40, extending below the lower edges or" the door sections and provided with attaching portions secured to the inner faces or" the said sections. llVhen the depending' studs or projections ofthe lower or main door are engaged withv the groove or guter of the door sill, the lower portion of the said door is firmly held against either inward or outward movement. The groove or gutter is also adapted to receive dependprojections 410i" the ventilating door, which is provided at the top with sockets or openings 42, arranged at intervals in position to receive the depending studs or projections of the lower or main door. The Ventilating door, which, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, consists of vertical bars and horizontal connecting bars, may be oi any preferred construction, and can be screened it desired, and it is provided at its ends with projecting flanges 43, arranged in vertical planes and adapted to tit against the outer faces of the vertical flanges 44 at opposite sides of the door opening to prevent the door from being moved inwardly. The vertical langes 44 are also engaged at their inner .faces by horizontal project-ions or lingers 44a, fixed to and extending from the outer vertical' edges of the door sections Q ando. By this construction, the Ventilating door is interlocked at the sides 'and bottom of the car and at thetop with the bottom of the lower or main door and is securely retained in position. The vertical flanges 44 consist of sides or wings of angle strips or pieces 45, having their other sides or wings securedto the edges of the car at opposite sides of the door opening. The upper door l and the lower or main door are also adapted to ita'gainst the vertical flanges 44 of l the angle strips 45, which form tight joints at the sides of the door opening.
The lower edge of the upper door extends' below the upper edges of the vertical sec-- -tions of the lower door, and the said upper door is equipped at its outer face adjacent to its lower edge with a horizontal flanged bar 4G, having one of its flanges litted against the upper door and suitably securedto the same, while the other flange projects horizontally from the said upper doorover upper horizontal outwardly extending flanges 47 and 4S ot the vertical door sections to provide a tight joint at the top otk the lower or main door.' The horizont-al projecting flange of the bar 46 is provided at intervals with slots 49, adapted to be enga ged by a pointed bar or other tool to enable the vertical sections of the lower door to be forced inwardly into position, and per- .mittirig the bills of hooks 50 to project throught-he said horizontal flange ot the bar 4G for engaging the upper 'ends of the vert-ical sections of the lower or main door for securing the same in tight engagement for fastening the latter in its closed position. The hooks 50, which are pivoted, are designed to be constructed similar' to those de# scribed in the aforesaid application.
The lower or main door is equipped with a pivoted door engaging bar 5l, mounted on the vertical door section 3 and being of a length to extend entirely across the door sections 3 and 4 and overlap the inner portions of thesectio-ns 2 and 5. rlhe ends of the door engaging bars are equipped with reversely arranged hooks 5:2, adapted to env` gage horizontally disposed handles 53 mounted on the 'door sections 2 and 5- and forming loops and performing the double function of a `keeper and a handle., The door section 4 is equipped with an inverted approximately U-shaped keeper 54, arranged in the path of and adapted to .be engaged by the pivoted locking bar 51. rlhe pivoted bar is secured in Iits engaging position by mechanism adapted to receive a seal and connected with the lower end of a chain 55, which is provided at its upper end with a pin 5G adapted to engage aniopening in the horizontally projecting flange ot the upper door. The seal receiving means for lacking the pivoted bar is constructed simiwith the lower edge of the upper door and lar to that shown and described in the aforesaid application, and as .no claim is made in the present application to the locking means for securing the upper door l and the lower or .main door in their closed positions, further description and illustration thereof are deemed unnecessary.
Vhen the sectional doors of the lower or main door are folded'against the outer face of the car, they are arranged beneath hinged shields 57 having their upper edges disposed horizontally at` opposite sides of vthe door opening and constructed of sheet metal, or other suitable material, bent longitudinally at 5S adjacent to their lower edges to form angularly related upper and lower portions and having their lower edges bent upwardly to provide bottom ilanges 59 and to form ein.V terior grooves or gutters 60,- adapted to carry the drip beyond the vertical edges of the folded sectional doors. Whenthe sectional' dtors are folded-beneath-the shields, the
upper ,portions of the latter extend downwardly and outwardly atan inclination from the outer face of the ear, and the' lower por tions, which have the grooves or gutters, are arranged in a substantially vertical plane.

What is claimed is:-
l. The combination with a ear having a door openingjof an upperdoor hinged to the ear at the top of the opening and arranged to swing upwardly and downwardly, lower Sectional doors hinged to tl e ear at opposite sides ot the door opening and coperatinp; with the upper door to close the said opening, Said lower sectional doors heineY eiidaiile i'ipwardly and downwardly and adapted io he arranged in an elevated peer tion in the door opening, and a orali-ating door arranged in the lower portion of the door opening' and supporting the sectional doors and detarhahly interloel-:ed with the lnaine and with the ear.
2. The combination with a ear having a door opening, of sieetional doors hinged to the ear at opposite aides of the door openi're and alidahle upwardly and downwardly and adapted to he arranged in an elevated position, and a Ventilating` doi r arranged in the lower portion ol the door opening Loeaeos and supporting the sectional doors and det'achably connected with the same and with i the car.

The combination with a car having door openingprovided at the `,bottoni with a groove or gutter, of sectional? doors hinged to the door opening-at oppositiev sides thereof and slidable upwardly and downwardly and provided at their lower ends with studs or projections to engage with the groove or gutter when the sectional doors are in their lowerniost position, and a Ventilating door adapted to support the sectional doors in an elevated position and provided at the top with openings or sockets to receive the said studs crit-projections and having depend .ingl projections at the bottom to engage with the groove or gutter.

The combination witha carhaving a door opening and provided at the bottom thereotl with a groove orgutter, pintle rods mounted on the car exteriorly thereof at opposite sides of the door opening, doors provided with movable hinge elements slidably mounted on the pintle rods and extending into the door opening to permit the doors to he engaged with and disengaged from the said groove or gutter, and exterior set collars mounted on the pintle rods andy having clamping means for engaging' the same, said set collars being adapted to hold the movable hinge elements against upward movement on the pintle rods to retain the doors in engagement with the groove or gutter of the bottom of the car.
8. The combination with a car having a door opening, of a hinged door mounted at the said door opening and arranged to swing substantially flat against the exterior or the side of the car beyond the door opening, and
a shield hinged at its upper edge to the ex. i terior of the car and also. located beyond the door opening and extending below the plaine of the upper edge of the door and lying against the latter, said shield being arranged toswing upwardly and downwardly to permit the door to swing horizontally beneath it and adapted to protect the door and retain the saine in its open position against the side ofthe car.
9. The combination of a car having a door opening, sectional doors hinged to the car at opposite sides of the door opening and foldable against the exterior of the car, and shields hinged at their upper edges to the car and also located beyond thedoor opening and extending below the plane of the upper edge ol2 the doors and adapted to swing upwardly and downwardly to permit the doors to swing horizontally beneath them, said shields being adapted to protect the doors and retain the same in theiry open position.
