NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEF GAWRON, on BERLIN, GERMANY.
CLOSING DEVICE FOR CANS, PITCHERS, 800.;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,913, dated January 3, 1899.
Application filed March 29, 1898. Serial No. 675,614. (No model.)
T0 or whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEF, GAWRON, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and aresident of Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closing Devices for Cans, Pitchers, or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved closing device for cans, pitchers, or the like, and has for its object to obtain an equal and elastic pressure of the closing-surfaces.
In order to understand my invention, I have shown it in the accompanying drawings, of which the following is a description.
a Figure 1 is a side elevation of a closed can provided with a closing device according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 shows a side elevation of the can when opened. Figs. 4 and 5 are two modified forms of my improved closing device. Figs; 6 to 10 represent several modifications of a detail of the invention.
The same parts are indicated by the same letters of reference.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, d is a bow pivoted in projections t' at the sides of the vessel or can and adapted to be moved over the whole length of the cover f of the can or stopped at the middle of the cover by a stop g, so that it can be moved only on the side of the cover f opposite to the grip of the cover, Fig. 1, or on the other side, Fig. 3. On the bow dis pivoted a lever (1, having an eccentric b, which when the can is closed rests in a groove 0 of the cover, as shown in Fig. 1. For opening the cover the lever ct is raised, whereby the eccentric b is turned and moved away'from the groove, the pressure now ceasing. Then the bow d is turned away from the cover f, which now can easily be opened by depressing the grip p. is turned against the grip, as shown in Fig. 3, it serves at the same time for opening the cover, as the eccentric b presses on the grip In this position the .projections c of the lever ct rest against the bow d and prevent the further turning of the lever a. These projections are shown in Fig. 2 at c c and they are formed by laterally-extendin g shoulders or parts from the main part of the lever a. WVhen the lever is turned over from the position of Fig. 2 to that of Fig. 3, the shoul- If the bow.
ders abut against the shoulders c c on the bow d and the lever d cannot therefore turn farther than shown in Fig. 3, as the shoul ders are then in contact.
In order to prevent the destruction of the can by a high pressure in its interior, the bow d is elastic, so that the cover can be lifted by a high pressure beneath it.
Inthe modification shown in Fig. 4 in stead of the lever a roller 11 is mounted on the bow.
.tance between the pivot-opening z and the.
edge of the can is varied. By the same arrangement the pressure of the closing device can be regulated. This adjustment results from the fact that the pivot-opening z is arranged eccentric in relation to the pivot of the disk g, which is shown in dotted lines in Figs. 6 and 8.
Two modifications of this device are shown in Figs. 9 and 10, in which the bow d is connected with the pivot .2 by a screwing device, so that-it may be adjusted by screwing it up or down;
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention and the manner in which the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. In closing devices forcans, pitchers or the like the combination of a bow pivoted at the can of a lever pivoted on said bow and provided with an eccentric, of a projection at the lever resting against the how, when the can isopened, anda cover pivoted to the can and having a grip to be engaged by the bow substantially as described and shown in the accompanying drawings.
2. In closing devices for cans, pitchers or the like the combination of a bow pivoted at the can, of a lever pivoted on said how and provided with an eccentric and of a stop arranged on the cover of the can and adapted to prevent the passage of the bow and eccenprovided with an eccentric and of means for varying the distance between the pivot of the bow and the edge of the can substantially as described and shown in the accompanying IO drawings. I
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEF GAVRON.
