To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK HENRY HAVEKOTTE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Faucet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in gate-faucets of that class in which the gate is arranged to move transversely of the tube over the end thereof to open or close the tube, these devices being used in connection with heavy or semisolid liquids. In faucets of this sort difficulty has been experienced in preventing the accidental opening of the gate; and my invention seeks to provide a means for securing the gate not only against accidental opening, but against fraudulent opening. attain by providing a lock device for the gate which with the aid of a suitable key may be thrown into action, thus preventing' the'gate from being opened, and when it is desired to open the gate a slight `application of the key:
releases the lock.
This specification is an exact description of one example of my invention, while the claims deiine the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

This arm is here shown to comprise a fork c', straddling the tube and pivoted thereto, a finger-piece c2, projecting upward and forward from the crotch of the fork c', and a casing c3, projecting forwardly beneath the finger-piece c2. The arm c is preferably formed in two longitudinal sections fastened together by screws c1. (See Fig. l.)

In the operation of the device when it is de= sired to lock the gate the faucet should be closed and then the screw d tightened, so as to press forcibly against the gate and hold it in place.A This action of the screw may be carried so faras to prevent the faucet from being opened even by the use of a hammer or other heavy instrument. To unlock the faucet, it is only necessary to relax the pressure of the screw, whereupon the gate will be held against the tube only by the action ofthe spring g. Should the spring break, the screwy will nevertheless hold the valve closed. Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention Inay be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a faucet, the combination of a tube, stops on the tube, a gate, a swinging arm having a fork pivoted to the tube, lugs on said fork for engaging said stops to limit the throw of the fork, said arm being provided at its upper outer end with a handle and having a cavity with a reduced threaded portion near the outer end thereof, a screw threadec (Shown in Fig.

in said reduced portion and provided with a square outer end and a conical inner end, said gate having on its rear side an outwardly-extending projection in alinement with Said screw and of equal diameter therewith, said projection being provided on its outer end with a conical recess to be engaged by thc conical end of the screw, and a compressionspring lying in the inner end of said cavity in the swinging arm, said spring bearing vcontinuously against the gate and engaging the periphery of the cavity with its outer diameter and at its inner end surrounding the projection on the gate and thereby serving to hold the gate in operative connection with the swinging arm independent of said screw.
