Be it known that I, FRANK NORTON Don- LAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Humboldt, in the county of Richardson and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements" in Fountain- Inkstands, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in fountain ink-wells, and the object that I have in view is the provision of a simple cheap article affording a "shallow dip-chamber which supplies just'the rightdepth'of ink for properly wetting the nibs and slot of a pen, which allows the ink to flow readily into the reservoir and the air to escape therefrom during the operation of filling the stand, which may be easily and quickly washed out in all its parts, which supplies all the ink contained in the reservoir to the dip-chamber, and in which the ink is stored so that dust and dirt cannot have access to the reservoir.
With these ends in View my invention consists of an inkstand embodying certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is tobe had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters ofreference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

One of the important features of my invention consists in the provision of a filling-port g in the vertical front wall G of the inkstand A, said port being closed by any suitable means such, for example, as the plug or stopper g. This port g opens into the reservoir-chamber a of the inkstand, and said port allows the ink to readily flow into the chamber a when the stand is placed on end in the position shown by Fig. 3.
The inkstand may be of any desired ornamentalpattern,and,as shown by the drawings, it is formed with a sloping front portion h, having a series of ledges h, adapted to form a pen-rack; but it is evident that this rack may be omitted.

The inkstand may rest firmly on the surface afforded by the back wall 0 when the article is turned up to the position shown by Fig. 3. The arrangement of the bottom a" of the reservoir-chamber in a plane above the bottom 6 of the dip chamber allows all of the ink to flow from the reservoir-chamber into said dip-chamber, because the ink can pass from the bottom a through the passage f without obstruction by intervening ledges or shoulders.
In cleaning the ink-well it is placed on end in the position shown by Fig. 3, the plug is removed, and water is poured through the port 1 into the chamber a. The stand may now be shaken in order to agitate the Water contained in the reservoir, thus washing out any sediment which may accumulate due to extensive or continued use of the article. In like manner the dip-chamber 3 may be washed or flushed out by admitting water thereto; but in this connection I desire to observe that the main supply of ink is kept in a condition where the air cannot have a ready access thereto, whereby dust and dirt are exeluded from the ink and the formation of sediment is minimized.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An inkstand having an inclined and a vertical front portion, a reservoir-chamber,a narrow extension integral with the stand, a shallow dip-chamber of small cross-sectional area in said extension, an inclined passage leading from the bottom of the reservoir-chmnber to the bottom of the dip-chamber, a stoppered port in the vertical part of the front and having its imaginary axis in a plane at an angle to the like axis of the dip chamber, and ledges forming a pen-raek on the inclined part of the front.
