GLOVE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,664, dated December 25, 1883.

Application filed April 12, 1883.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AUsrIN O. BUTTS, of

Groveston, Essex County, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gloves, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same when taken in connection with the ac companying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an outline of the pieces used in making myimproved glove. Fig. 2 is a view of the back of the glove as finished and fastened, showing the pads. Fig. 3 is a view of the back of a glove having a modification, having the pad attached.

Heretofore and before this my invention gloves have been made in various manners,

and have generally been made with four seams on each finger.

This my invention is an improvement in the manner of cutting gloves, and is an improvement on the devices patented to me by Letters Patent, dated January 1, 1878, and September 3, 1878, and numbered, respectively, 198,921 and 207,591; and it-consists in so cutting the glove that the fingers have but two seams, that the side pieces are so attached to the palm as to hold the glove on without covering the entire back of the hand, that a pad is attached to the palm and thumb continuously, and the various combinations hereinafter specified. Any one, two, or more of the features above set forth may be embodied in a glove.

To make a glove according to this my inventionI cut from a stout piece of buckskin or like material a palm, as shown by E, Fig. 1, whereof the parts a b c d form the front of the index, medius, medicus and small fingers, respectively. This piece E should be of sufficient size to cover the entire inside of the hand.

The piece A, which forms the side of the glove and a portion of the back, is sewed to the side of the piece E along the sides adjacent to one another in the drawings. The piece A is of such shape that one side will be straight, or nearly so, to correspond with the side of the piece E, to which it is secured, and the other side is curved or rounded, so that this piece is broader at or near the ends than it is near the center.

The piece B is made with two rectangular (Model) It has three nearly rectangular sides, and two nearly right angles and four acute angles, and three curved sides between the acute angles.

The piece 0 is fastened to the piece B by sewing the edge from 5 to 6 of B to the edge from 7 to 8 of G.

The other side piece, D, is very similar in shape to the side A, and has a wide part near each end, and is narrow at or near the center. The piece D is sewed to the piece 0 by sewing the edge of 0 from 9 to 10 and the edge of D from 11 to 12. The straight edge of D is now sewed to the straight edge of E along the edge from 13 to 14 of E, the edge of A from 1 to 16 is sewed to the edge of E from 17 to 18, the edge of B from 3 to 19 is sewed to the edge of E from 18 to 20, and the edge of B from 6 to 21 is sewed to the edge of E from 22 to 23, and the edge of C from 7 to 24 is sewed to E from 22 to 25, and the edge of G from 10 to 26 is sewed to E from 27 to 28, and the edge of D from 11 to 29 is sewed to E from 27 to 30, whereby the index-finger of the glove is made of A and a, the medius of B and b, the medicus of O and c, and the small finger of D and d.

The back of the glove so formed is made entirely of the side pieces,A and D, which leaves an opening at the back of the glove, as shown in Fig. 2, the glove being fastened bythe hooks and cords shown in Fig. 2, or other like fastening, only at the upper portion of the opening or near the wrist knuckles and back muscles of the hand being thereby left free to expand, and being uncovered are not so hot as they otherwise would be.

The palm or part E may be made of heavy leather, while the parts A B C D are made of thin leather or canvas.

The thumb may be made in the usual manner and sewed in the thumb-hole F, (shown two pieces of the shape of G, the edges of one of which pieces from 31 to 32 are secured to the edge of the piece E from 33 to 34, and the like edge of the other piece is sewed toAfrom 35 to 36, and the two pieces of which the thumb in dotted lines in n. If desired, instead of separate thumb-pieces, one may be formed of the same piece as'the palm or piece E, and the other piece may be of the piece A; but it is more economical of leather to cut them separate and sew them on.

On the inside of the palm E is secured a pad, H, just above the fingers, as is usual in gloves of this character. The pad K is also attached to the palm or piece E, and extends from 7t 70 to k k-that is, from the end of the thumb of the glove through the thumb across the palm to the farther side of the glove. This piece is made of one continuous piece, and is shown in Fig. 2 as applied to the second form of thumb mentioned. It may also be applied as a continuous pad to the first or ordinary form of thumb, as shown in Fig. 8, where the pieceD is cut away to show the pad K, which covers the seam between the palm or piece E and the thumb of the glove. The pads are shown as being secured to the inside of the glove. They, or either of them, may be equally Well fastened to the outside of the palm.

The glove shown and described is a short glove, such as is used by ball and criclcet The improvements may be applied to other gloves of full-length fingers, if desired.

I do not claim herein the attaching of the thumb to the side of the palm of the glove, as that is set forth and claimed in Patent No. 207,591, granted to me; nor do I claim the opening of the glove at the back thereof, as that is described and claimed in Patent No. 198,921.

lVhat I claim as new is 1. In a glove, the combination of the palm or piece E and the side Ate form the finger, and means of fastening the glove to the hand.

2. In a glove, the combination of the palm or piece E and the side A to forni one finger, and the side D to form another finger, the two sides forming the back of the glove, substantially as specified.

3. In a glove, the pad K. extending continuously across the thumb and palm of a glove, substantially as specified.
