Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. wOoD, OE HOUSTON, TEXS.
CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,621, dated December 18, 183. Application filed August 31. 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. WOOD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Houston, inthe county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a top view of the cap with the aps buttoned over the sack or pillow. Fig. 2 is a top view, showing iiaps unbuttoned and pillow folded on top of cap. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, showing the pillow inflated and in position on the side of the cap. Fig. 4 is a side elevation, and shows pillow inflated and in'position at back of cap.
My invention relates to certain improvements in traveling hats or caps, whereby I am enabled to provide a hat or cap with an adjustable pillow, which can be usedwhen desired, and folded up out of the way when not in use. To accromplish this I attach to a cap an air-tight sack or pillow, which can be inflated when needed, fandlwhen not in use the air can be withdrawn and the pillowvfolded up out of the way in the top of the cap. This cap is very useful to travelers, as it provides a comfortable pillow or head-rest, which is not more inconvenient to carry and occupies no more room than the ordinary travelingcap, the particular arrangement of which I will now proceed to describe.
Referring to the drawings, A is the cap, having the sector-shaped sections or naps B fastened to the upper part of thebody of said cap, each flap having a loop or button-hole, a, in its outer end.
C is an air-tight sack or pillow, made of india-rubber or any other suitable airtight material., Said pillow C is fastened to the cap, and is so arranged that it can be folded up on top of said cap, as shown in Fig. 2, and the iaps B buttoned over the same, as shown in Fig. l.'
Dis a nipple, by means of which the sack or pillow is filled with air. Said n ipple forms a button, to which the iiaps B are buttoned when the pillow is not in use, and is folded on top of the cap.
E is a strap, which serves to hold the cap on the head of the wearer.
When it is desired to use the pillow, theh iiaps are unbuttoned, and the sack or pillow inflated. It is then adjusted at any desired position, either on the side or back of the head, as shown in Figs. 3 and et. When not in use, the air is withdrawn, and the pillow folded up on top ofthe cap, and the flaps buttoned over the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a cap having an air-tight pillow secured to the top of 7o the same, provided with a suitable nipple' for inflating the pillow, in combination with fiaps for covering said pillow and securing it in place when not inflated, arranged substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' VILLIAM E. VOOD.
