LADYS HAT-CASE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, hfL-moannr Srnwnn'r Median/fauna citizen of the United States, and aresident of Carlton Hill, East Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladiesldat-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to newand :useful improvements in ladies hat cases for the purposeof containinga ladys hat when the same is not :used and particularly when traveling" on. cars or other vehicles so that the hat and its feathers or trimmings will be fully protected from dust or from being crushed or otherwise injured.
The object of my inventionis to provide a new and improved hat case which is simple in construction, very light, has no joints through which dust can enter, can be folded very compactly, so that itcan be placed into a container of small area, can easily and rapidly be opened upfor use and can easily be closed absolutely tight over the hat so as to exclude dust andfmoisture.
In the accompanying drawings in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures:-.Figure 1 is a face view of my new and improved hat case folded and located within the container, which lat-.
ter isshown open, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional View of my improved hat case adjusted for use and containing ahat, the top of the case or container being :closed. Fig.3 is a plan view of the construction shown in F ig. 2, the
upper part being turned to the rear and other parts being broken away to show the construction.
My improved hat container or receptacle 1, is made of fabric which is closely woven as to be impervious to dust but as light as practicable so as not to have any undue weight. This fabric is shaped approximately in the form of a bag with a mouth 2, at the edges of which a hollow bead or seam 3 is formed throughwhichcords or ribbons a ar-e passed by means of which the mouth can be drawn together and closed and which ribbons or cords 4 can also be used for suspending the hat container or receptacle with its contents from a hook, such as for example a hook such as found in railway cars or such as are found on the brackets of racks in railway cars. The bottom of the case or container is formed of four quadrant sec- Specification of Letters Patent.

tions 5 of a stiff or fairly stiff material for example, card board, but of course they can be made of other suitable material if de sired. These quadrant sections are placed to form a circleand are covered on both faces with fabric 6, which fabric may be the same kindas that of which the bag .1 is formcdbut may be other material, slightly heavier if desired. These two layers of material are stitched together as indicated at a in Fig. .3 along the outer quadrant edge and the inner side edges of each quadrant section. The inner corners of the quadrant sections 5 are cut off diagonally as at 7 so as to leave a rectangular portion in the center of the bottom of the case or receptacle whichis not provided with any stilfener. The bottom edges of the bag 1 ;are sewed. to the fabric edges of the bottomor if desired a covering layer of the bottom may bemade integral with the material of the bag. After the hat has been removed from the receptacle or :case, the bottom of this case is placed upon a flat support, such as a table or a car seat, etc., and by preference the mouth of the bag is closed and then the bag is permitted to settle down upon the bottom ofthe receptacle or container in such a manner that all parts, including the ribbons or cords 4; are within:the circumference of the base. Then the base is folded over to form a half circle and this half circle is folded over again so as to form a quadrant, all parts of the bag being folded and contained within the outline of this quadrant. The case when thus folded may be placed withina quadrant shaped bag or pouch9 having a flap. 10 with a fastening device 11; The inner end parts of the quadrant shaped stiiflcnlng material cannot be brol'cenor damaged by insertlngthe folded receptacle into the bag or pouch and furthermore the liability of forcing a sharp inner corner of one of the bottom stiffening sections through the covering material is completely avoided and thus there is no danger of perforating the container, either in folding; it or spreading it out for use and fln-therniore the construction that I have shown permits of folding the base more compactly and more rapidly. When the case or container is to be used for receiving); a hat, all that is necessary is to spread.
5 and its contents can be suspended by means of the strings 4, a substantially dome shaped body is formed over the hat and thus any liability of the material of which the container or case is made damaging the feathers or trimmings oi'the hat is avoided. The brim of the hat rests uponthe folding-bot- I tom and keeps the same substantially spread As l and prevents collapsing of the same. there are no oints that need beclosed and as the mouth of the bag can be closed cornpletely, there is no possibility of any dust' Gloves, eta, canalso be placed entering it. into the bag;
Having described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is p i 1. A hat-case comprising a seamless bag shaped container of fabric With an extensible mouth and means for closing said mouth and a folding bottom for said container,
which folding bottom is provided with four quadrant sections of stifi material-joined to eachother, each section being cut ofl' diagonally at the inner end, substantially as set 'forth. i
2. A hat case comprising a seamlessbag shaped container of fabric With anlextensi ble mouth and means for closing said mouth,
a folding bottom comprising four quadrant sectionsof stiff material, a covering-layer on each face of said quadrants and stitching uniting the said two layers along all the M contours of said stiffening quadrants, sub- Signed at Carlton in the county of Bergen'a'nd Stateof New- Jersey. 7
