VH. M. HALL. HANDLE FOR STEAM ANDKOTHER VALVES'.
Patented Deo. S18, 1883.

UNTTED STATES PATENT EFTCE.
HENRY M. HALL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO u THOMAS G. LOVEGROVE, OF SAME PLACE.
HANDLE FOR STEAM ANDKOTHER VALVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,575, dated December 18, 1883.
Application filed January 29, 1883. (No model.)
I0 all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of vPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful kImprovement `in Handles for Steam and other Valves liable to be heated, which improvement is fully set forth inthe following specication and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top or plan view of a valvehandle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section thereof in line x fr, Fig. 1.A Figs. 3 and Il are side elevations of modifications.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists in providing the handle of a valve liable to he heated with means, substantially as hereinafter set forth, whereby in operating the valve the hand is guarded and prevented from being burned.
Referring to the drawings. A represents the handle of a valve liable to be heated by steam or other hot iiuid admitted to said valve, said handle being of the form of an annulus or wheel. The periphery ofthe handle is grooved, as at a. and in the groove is fitted a band, B, of rubber-apocr conductor of heat-which rnily retains its position in the groove, and is of such width as to project outwardly beyond the peripheral edge of the handle.
It will be seen that when the valve is to be opened or closed the hand of the operator is placed in Contact with the band B, and the power exerted thereon is communicated to the handle, whereby the latter is rotated, as usual.
and produce results similar to those hereinbev l It is well known that when the handle of a heated valve is graspedthe palm of the hand is most liable to be burned, owing to the pressnre of the saine on the handle and its sensitiveness; This is avoided by the projecting portion of the band, which removes the palm from the metal of the handle, and,if properly grasped, may also reinovetheiingers therefrom, thus guiding the hand and preventing bnrning thereof, a better hold of the handle being 45 also obtained.
- The groove a may be rectangular, round, or dovetailed in cross-section, and the band similarly shaped; or wh en stretched or sprung into y the groove the contiguous portion may asvsonne the shape ofthe groove.
For handles such as are shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the sides may be grooved longitudinally or transversely to receive one or more bands,
5E fore stated.
Having thus described niy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy The handle of a valve, provided with a guard consisting of a rubber band, which is fitted in a peripheral groove of the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY M. HALL.
